Pregnant with Melanoma

Hello,My daughter is 7 months pregnant and just had a small spot removed from her leg. The Dermatologist believes it is Melanoma, though she will not know for sure for about 2 weeks. Help! What are the expected treatments, if it comes back malignant? We are just getting over the cancer treatment for my husband-her Dad-and thought we were on even ground. Enough!

I wouldnt worry just yet. Most melanoma can be cured by surgery. If lymph nodes are involved or if it is metastatic then those are other problems. Assume the best for now and come back when you have more info.

RE: Pregnant with Melanoma

I discovered a mole on my leg to be melanoma, stage I in January. I had to have a second incision to remove the outer area to ensure that all cancerous cells were removed and it hadn't spread. This was all done in a matter of weeks. Jan. 4 mole removed, sent for biopsy..results given Jan. 11 and second incision on Jan. 15th. By Jan. 25 I was told that the second incision produced NO additional melanoma cells so all was good. No other treatment required except major follow-up with derm every three months.I however went to three different Oncologist specialists and had consultations with them just based on what I was reading on internet. Your daughter might have to do this. I also went back on my medical records and obtained all past xrays and ct scans that were done from past 7 years (from various emergency visits) to have a cancer specialist read the scans to ensure that there isn't something else we should be watching for. I'd advise you to do that for her for a peace of mind. They found two additional tumors that they are now watching for growth that showed up in past scans but no ER doctor felt was important to comment on (or maybe they weren't experienced in the cancer field to look for signs)...so better to be pro than have any surprises. Your daughter can't have CT scans or xrays but she can have ultrasounds. They found one of my tumors via ultrasound (not ct scan) so I'd advise she have that done at least now and have the other tests done once her baby is born. Good Luck..it is a scary road to go down, but if caught early, a safe one.God Bless,Donna Jay

RE: Pregnant with Melanoma

I just wanted to mention that melanoma usually appears on the skin and then if not treated in time will spread to lymph nodes or by way of blood to other organs not vice versa. Once established, late stage, it can then appear on the skin as small red tumors but my point is to treat the area on the leg first. If it indeed is a melanoma and it may not be, removal and staging will then decide what and if further treatment need be rendered. Usually careful follow up is all that is needed if surgically removed in it's early stage. Melanoma usally starts in the skin before spreading internally where it can be treated so there is no reason to do further testing unless it is determined to be a late stage melanoma which I doubt.
