Should I see an Oncologist?

In early April I had a laser cone biopsy after learning I had Atypical Glandular Cells of Unknown Significance. The cone biopsy revealed that I had adenocarinoma in situ. My gynecologist had done the surgery and gave me the diagnosis. I have a follow up on Thursday and have been given the option to wait until I have a child before having a hysterectomy. I'm 31 with no kids. Should I be seeing an oncologist, or is a regular gynecologist experienced enough to handle this? Thanks for your help!

RE: Should I see an Oncologist?

After the run around that i experienced, insist on getting to the cancer agency as soon as possible. I had gyno do cone when she knew she couldn't get the cancer, she told me it was all we can do at this time when in fact she did have the choice to refer me or do the cone. I was delayed treatment by 2 months because of her decision. I am very angry as i await to start radiation therapy hopefully next week. It is too far gone now for radical hyst that was supposed to take place on may 21st

Well I called the oncologist's office today and was told they can't see me without a referral directly from my gynecologist. I have an appt on Thursday. He shouldn't have a problem referring me, right? Should I just insist on it? I would love to have a child, but I don't want to wait if it's not advisable. I'd feel better if an oncologist said it's OK to wait a year or more for my hysterectomy.

Yes, definitely. Gather up all your medical records from your gyn and get a second opinion from a gynecological oncologist who specializes in treating cancer. Adenocarcinoma is more aggressive than the common squamous cell cancers. It is glandular and often more difficult to treat.DO NOT WAIT. My daughter was diagnosed with clear cell (glandular) Adenocarcinoma of the cervix. She was treated in 2005 (hyster, radiation, chemo) but it got in her lymph system. It came back in 2007 and she never recovered. She was 29. Please do not wait. Get a 2nd opinion.I do not mean to scare you, but you must be your own advocate. Go online and educate yourself and do what is best for you. God bless you and always remember you can beat this thing.Concerned Dad

Please see a GYN/oncologist as soon as possible! If your current gynecologist won't give you a referral, I'm sure your primary care physician would. Your doctor should have sent you there as soon as the lab report showed it was in the glands for further diagnosis. I am so sorry you are facing something like this. But the quicker you get another opinion, the quicker you can protect your life by addressing it.

But the quicker you get another opinion, the quicker you can protect your life by addressing it. I had a cone 18 years ago with your diagnosis...said this is a pre-cancerous condition insitu. But fast forward to last 12/26 and I had a radical hysterectomy with cervical cancer...took everything out but the good news is that it was detected early and although I opted NOT to do the recommended chemo and radiation, I am doing the alternative nutiritional options. But you must keep on top of it...early detection which sounds like a cliche is what saved me. A year down the road and it would have spread outside my female organs. If I were you, I would get a good ongologist to do a CT and Pet/Scan ASAP. Conventional medicine will tell you that you need Chemo and radiation but do your research...it doesn't cure cancer! It kills your good cells and puts the cancer in "remission" most of the time it comes back & with a vengeance because all your good cells are damaged and your body can't fight it off.I'm adding you to my prayer list because I know you want a child and pray this will happen for you...many blessings,Janie
