RE: morphine and jerks

Hi there, My mother has been diagnosed with lung cancer 18months ago, she has also been going through the same jerks. She is now in hospice as she is very ill, but this has happened over time, her jerks have come and gone, and yes she the same is not responding with her eyes open, but is very alert and aware of what is going on in the surroundings, however she sometimes does not answer any questions at times but just listens. She takes morphine and then feels really tired as she is first in pain then is given a high dosage drug which tires her.You have to just deal with these jerks, as they may at times become worse than normal, but go away after some time, but then they do return. Hope this helps.

My husband just passed away three days ago. He had a prostatic carcinosarcoma. A few days back he developed the jerking and muscle twitches. I took him to hospital to have pain medication changed to methadone and fentanyl. The reason for the twitches and jerks is the body builds a resistance to a certain drug and it had to be changed. My husband was taking 102 mgs. of Dilaude or as called Hydro Morph Contin (long acting) twice daily plus short acting for break-through pain. Hope this helps. Carol

My dad was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in May of this year. His cancer had already spread from his lungs to his liver and bones. Two days after he received his diagnosis, Dad was admitted to the hospital for pain management. He was put on Morphine because his pain was out of control. At one pint, my dad was taking 105 mg of Morphone a day. He was terribly shaky and confused. He was hallucinating as well. On Fri., June 13th, his pain meds got changed. He now takes Oxycodone (can have up to 12 pills a day) and has a Fentanyl patch (25 mg). Dad is much clearer now with the change in pain meds. Kristi

RE: morphine and jerks

My dad is home now with hospice. He was diagnosed almost 4 years ago with stage 4 lung cancer. It is now spread all over his body. He is taking Morphine for the pain. He started off with the liquid, but they changed it to the 12hr pill form which seems to help some. His pain just seems to keep getting worse as the cancer takes over his body. He also has been having the jerks alot. The doctors prescribed Levothyroxine for it. They said it had something to do with the nerve endings in his body. He also couldn't drink without spilling it on himself. We try not to give him that drug unless he reallly needs it and we only give a tiny bit because it makes him so "weird" and out of it. They seem to have subsided some, but he'll get them in his legs every now and then and sometimes at night when he's sleeping. Anyway....I just wanted to let you know you're not alone in this!!! God bless,Kristen
