48 hours and counting!!!!

My surgery will be friday moring and as the hours pass by I begin to get really nervous. I know it is necessary but the thought of the whole procedure really terrifies me. I have stage three colon cancer and the surgery I will be having is removing the ascending colon and rectum and bringing the decending colon down and also a possible illeostomy. Has anyone ever had this surgery and what kind of a recovery time did you experienced. I am an active 45 year old Mother of three so maybe that will help me recover faster, Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks, Sheryl

Sheryl,I had a colon resection but had to write anyway as I understand your anxiety. I'm having surgery Tuesday to remove "something" from my small bowel. I know the waiting is hard and intestinal surgery is no fun at all, so we're both going to have some bad days before the good days come around again. But they WILL come around. My previous 3 surgeries (colon cancer, small bowel obstruction, and small bowel cancer) took 5, 14 and 9 days in the hospital. I reacted and recovered at a different pace each time. I was 40 and fit the first time, so I do think your age and general fitness will be on your side. My best wishes to you. I'll be thinking about you on Friday. I hope someone else who has had a more similar surgery will respond to your post with helpful information. Take care and let us know how you're doing.Lynn

Thanks Lynn, I wish you well as you go through your surgery too. My thoughts and prayers go out to you. I know we go through a roller coaster of emotions, my anxiety has gotten worse this week but it always doeas before surgery. Sometimes I feel like screaming and other days I just don't have the energy to care. I hope all goes well with you.Sheryl
