I have survived 3 years with stage 4 RCC...1. 2 yrs ago removed L kidney to give some time...2. already had mets to both lungs...3. took nexavar for 10 months till it quit working, then tried Sutent didn't work at all, then Tarceva/avistine same results...4.four months ago had bad met to L4 verabra, after radiation didn't work, had major surgery to L4 and lots of cancer around it ,with nerve envolvement, which let me keep walking, otherwise I would be in bed the rest of my life, whatever that may be...having a hard time healing from that, as all L's are fused too, we stared another inhibitor torisil too soon after surgery so it was stopped the 1st week because it started spinal/rt leg pain the next day that was terrable, couldn't even sit without lots of pain, talked to the oncol docs yesterday and we agreed to wait 6 more weeks on the torisil...But if I did not have all this surgery I surley would not be here today...Hope that makes it easier for you to make your mind up about met surgery...my opinion is if you got mets, get ride of them if you can...Mel

Hi John..I had kidney cancer since 1994 and it metastized in 7places in my body in the last 2 years. I tried sutent it didn/t work..so I had 6 surgeries in the last 2 years. It was a great feeling to have all the tumors out. I had the surgeries because I could and it was successful. Unfortunatelly after 6 months I have more tumors. This time I was told I could not have surgurey on them./ so I am trying sutent again and probably other new meds. I prefer surgery but thats because I don't like the side effects of the meds. Hope this helps

Surgery is usually the best way to treat RCC if all mets can be removed. However, if the surgery on your shoulder can preserve the function of your shoulder, I would think it would be a good idea even if the lung mets cannot be removed. Radiation treatment can weaken bone.

I should only stay overnight. My orthopedic onc. Dr says this should give me relief from the shoulder pain. With my scans showing everything stable or shrinking this will be a welcome relief. I'll keep you informed of my recovery. Thanks for all the response . It means alot Take Care John

Hi! Julie, Thank you for asking about my surgery. I went in on the 17th of July, The surgery lasted an hour or so, Then I spent 2 hours in recovery because they couldn't get the pain under control. I had a pretty rough night Thurs., the pain block wore off and the morphine wasn't helping at all. On Friday the Dr gave me something stronger and the pain was under control. He kept me one more night to make sure the pain was stable. Saturday I was able to come home and i've been just taking it easy letting this shoulder heal. I believe I'll be fine once it has completely mended.I go back Wed. to let him look and tell me when I start Sutent again. That's about it for now so keep in touch and let me know how your husband is doing on the Sutent. Take Care John
