They radiate us to within an inch of our lives. It is no surprise our scalps are burned. I had it, it subsided after awhile. I used to slather cream all over it to make it feel better--had no hair of course so that was easy. The itch was there, too and the cream helped that as well. Good luck to you and your Mom.

Aquafor is a great topical moisturizer that is tolerated well by many skin types and was specifically mentioned by our radiation oncologist as the only type of topical cream my wife should use on her scalp during and following radiation (but not to be applied in the hours before a treatment). Later, beyond radiation treatments, her plastic surgeon recommended she use Eucrin lotion. They are made by the same company I believe. Both were very helpful.

My husband's radiation oncologist also recommended Aquafor, and also baby-type shampoo (I bought Aveeno baby shampoo). I don't know that my husband felt a strong burning/itching, but his scalp was definitely more sensitive and red, like a sunburn, and the Aquafor/Aveeno seemed to help.Best wishes to you and your Mom.Nancy**husband dx 8/07 GBM, surgery, 7-wks IMRT radiation/Temodar, currently on 5/23 Temodar, 8 cycles completed.

This sounds like a side effect of the chemo. My mom felt this same way during tx-- it really drys your skin.

Another good one is Miaderm. It's specially made for radiation skin effects and I've found it to be very soothing as well as keeping the skin in pretty good shape (all things considered). I ordered it on-line at http://miaderm.com/.

Hi-- My Mom just went thru rad & chemo and she complained of itching and burnign also. I think it's a side-effect of teh combination-- it just really dries your skin out and takes some time to get used to. It only lasted towards the end of the rad and I would say within a couple weeks after that-- it was gone!So just tell your mom she'll be ok-- if she can just make it a little longer.
