Tongue Cancer/secondary Tumor

my 40 yr old nephew's dentist sent him to a ear, nose and throat dr. They did a biopsy of his tongue and found cancer. He is having an MRI on Monday, but they have told him that he needs to have more surgery on his tongue... most likely having half to 3/4 of his tongue removed. They also told him that the tongue cancer was not the main tumor, and that is auto immune system is attacking itself. Does anyone know what type of cancer would do this?????
He is a salesman, and his best asset is his mouth!! The dr also told him he would be able to speak with 3/4 of his tongue removed.Has Anyone out there had this much of their tongue removed??
Thanks, Barbara119
