Concered about oral cancer. I have a strange smooth patch...

Hello. I am new to these forums and must admit I am scared of cancer. After watching my grandfather die of throat and lung cancer the thought is horrible. But I have noticed a strange smooth spot in my mouth on the cheek, near the back set of left molars and inbetween top on bottum. It feels oddly dry but is flat, painless, and barely raises. It has been there for five days and I cannot tell if it is getting better. I will go so a doctor in 3 days if it is not healed. I am a smoker, the age of 19, and have been smoking for 5 years. I know it would be rare for me to have oral cancer because I am so young. Please dont tell me I need to go to the doctor and get checked...I know this. The spot in my mouth is about the size of a nickel or quarter.. It has a very strange rough ring around it. It feels different at the touch of the tough. It's not numb. It's somewhat red, I think only because Ive been playing with it. If anyone can relate to having something like this, please do tell. It could be from an infected tooth maybe, or chewing on it in my sleep.

RE: Concered about oral cancer. I have a strange smooth patch....

Hi, Matt,

My name is Brian. I was diagnosed with oral cavity cancer about 2 months ago. Mine started as what seemed to be a 'canker sore' back on the left floor of my mouth under my tongue. I started small. I treated it with some over the counter remedies, these only seemed to have fed it. It grew to about the size of a quarter before I was concerned enough to have it checked out. Mine was fairly painful and not 'tough' at all. My ENT doctor told me it had to go, then we'd do a biopsy on it to see what it was. Well, the biopsy revealed it was malignant, also that we failed to get it all with surgery. Today I finished my 24th radiation treatment with 9 to go. The future looks bright, the inside (and outside) of my mouth not so bright. I'm in a fair amount of pain, lost 13 lbs, and don't care to eat much. Do yourself a favor, don't wait anymore. Get your young self in and see a Dr., NOW!

Good Luck,
Brian

Well. I dont think I have it anymore. See I got really pissed at it and scratched it and it spread like over my whole cheek over night. It appears to be healing and it's not so rubbery anymore. I think it's some sort of canker sore. That and I did some research on it. Appears the main percentage of chewers get it and smokers can get it but it's very rare. Its only been 6 days...I'll wait just a little longer.

Hi, I also had a patch of blistered skin on my tongue. I thought it was from ill fitting lower plate, finally went back to dentist and had a biospy. Came back squamous cell cancer. I will enter the hospital on Dec. the 4th to have it removed and pray it has not spread.
I wish you all the luck in the world.

Oral Cancer

I hope you had this spot on the inside of your cheeck checked out. The thing you said about being too young to have oral cancer...I had it at age 21. I am lucky to be alive, and I have been told that by every Dr that I have ever seen, I am a survivor of 40 years. I had surgery and they removed half the roof of my mouth and half my cheek bone. Especially if you "chew", do yourself a big favor, quit...and by all means go to a Dr. Judy
