Tumor Markers Rise During Chemo

I am taking chemo for breast cancer (FEC protocol). I had a lumpectomy in April to remove a small cancer (Stage 1) with no node involvement. After my fourth (out of six treatments), my breast cancer tumor makers were elevated. My doctor said this happens at times during chemo but they are not sure why. They usually go down, however. Does anyone have experience with this happening?

Thanks! Bobyn

I am on my 4th chemo regiman (this time Navelbine)and in the past my tumor markers have always gone down with chemo. They did go up after my 1st treatment and now the have beeen stalled for 4 months and it has me concerned. The Dr. did say they can go up at first since the chemo is disrupting the bad cells like it should I guess that makes logical sense. Next week I see the Dr, and we will talk about possibly switching to another chemo drug or something...Barbara

My mom is on her 6th treatment for Primary Peritneal Carcinoma. This cancer is supposed to be just like ovarian. It behaves the same and is treated the same, however her ca-125 was originally 2938 and after surgery and 5 treatments it was down to 91. But now it is up to 111. Her doctor told us that this means its coming back or the test may not have been done correctly, I am scared and dont no what this means. I wish someone could answer this question correctly.
