Sugar feeds cancer?

Everything I have ever read says this is true. I know that since I have given up sugar and changed my diet, I am doing so much better.
The thing is...when I started radiation therapy, they were serving donuts in the lobby!!! What were they thinking? They told me to eat anything and everything I could get my hands on. Thank the Lord I did not listen. I have been on Immpower and Coral Calcium and other supplements and am doing real well. I have refused chemo.

Dear Judy,

It is disconcerting to walk by bowls of chocolate candies or plates of donuts offered at cancer (or for that matter-any!) hospitals or clinics. The reality of most convention treatment centers!

Sugar feeds cancer is an easy way to let people know that diets high in sugar or very sugary foods cause blood sugar levels to rise, thus depressing immunity to some degree. That is the reason to avoid refined carbohydrates. Any excess refined carbohydrate would also feed normal cells. Any excess refined carbohydrate would also feed normal cells. No distinction there. The key, then, is to stabilize blood sugar to avoid impacting immunity. Eating regular meals at regular times and adding protein to a sugary meal will help moderate blood sugar.

My mom had lung cancer 2 years ago. She went to UAB in Birmingham, Alabama. She had a series of tests, one was PET test and we were told that in fact, cancer does feed off of sugar. From what I understood, she was injected with some kind of substance that contained sugar and that it would go straight to cancer cells? What does that tell you? Wouldn't it be wonderful if changing our diets to include nothing with sugar could stop cancer? I believe I could do it!! So why do we still have sugar laden foods in the grocery stores? Why haven't we been told this?

It is not only food that contain high level of sugar are to be avoided. Fruits with high level of sugar (frutose) should also be avoided. I found that tropical fruits have a higher level of sugar than fruits from temperate countries.

I read once a doctor who mentioned through his vast experience in treating cancer patients, he seldom sees one who is able to overcome who consume much sugar in his diet.

I also found it amazing that the docs were so willing to give all sorts of drugs, but had no idea how to counsel properly for nutrition. Their idea of nutrition was to eat as many high calorie items as possible because weight loss was an issue during cancer treatments - meanwhile I was at least 60 lbs. overweight. I also refused chemo. I read Anne Frahm's book "Cancer Battle Plan" and used her ideas, but did not go as far as she did with enemas and such. But after a lumpectomy and radiation, I've been cancer free for 6 years. Good luck to you! You've got a powerful mind - use it well!

You can buy coral calcium online. Make sure you get the type that is endorsed by Robert Barefoot; he's an expert on coral calcium. Make sure you get the type that comes from the ocean bed (Okinawa coral reefs), not fossilized coral calcium. Type in Google.com in your address bar and when the Google search page comes up, type in coral calcium and then search; it will bring up lots of sites that sell it. My husband is taking it; he's stage IV lung cancer with metastasis to lymph nodes, adrenal gland, right thighbone, and right lower arm bone. Diagnosed 9-02 started radiation and first round chemo (Taxol). Now going through round two of chemo with Navelbine; the cancer in his forearm was just diagnosed two weeks ago; I started him on coral calcium two weeks ago; I give him a minimum of 6 capsules a day; he is also taking lots of other supplements and vitamins as well. He also developed leg swelling due to blood clots that lasted about 2 months. Had to be hospitalized to have a heparin drip and started taking coumadin (a blood thinner). The clots are finally going/gone as the swelling is down. I don't know if the coral calcium is responsible for any of his recuperation but I will continue to give it to him.

Thanks for your article - I was so shocked to read it because I was diagnosed with lobular carcinoma of the breast - and can you believe than with diabetes - NO ONE DR. has ever recommend I take vitamins or have ever said anything about the sugar. What do they think or better yet do they think? I am just flabbergasted. What is the Immpower you talked about? I will check out the Coral Calcium.

Judi:

I'm another Judy with a husband with Stage 4 esophageal cancer. The oncologist said there was nothing that would save my husband - it wasn't worth putting him through radiation and surgery was out. He could try chemo if he wanted to live longer than 6 months. He was told to eat everything - sugar, desserts, junk food just to keep his weight on!!! So we did that for the first month then due to my vast research on alternative medicine and nutrition, I found that SUGAR DOES FEED CANCER! Why wouldn't an oncologist know that! Wouldn't a cancer patient have a much better chance of living longer if he didn't feed the cancer?!! Well, without the oncologists blessing, we are doing mega antioxidants along with Coral Calcium. (Since cancer hates oxygen, the coral calcium is great!) It has been 6 months and my husband feels GREAT!! He hasn't lost weight and looks and feels better than he did 6 months ago. A book I recommend to EVERY cancer patient is "Beating Cancer With Nutrition" by Patrick Quillin. I would like to recommend it to Mr. Negative Oncologist but I'll wait until my husband is cured to do that! It really should be required reading for every oncologist! Best of Luck! Judy T.

I live in Holland Michigan and we have found Coral Calcium (as advertised on TV) at 3 different Walgreen Stores. In fact, this week they have it on sale for $14.95 instead of $19.95 for 90 gelcaps. I also saw it today in our health food store. Just make sure it has other ingredients as you need magnesium and Vit. D for the body to process the calcium. Check out the Fred Eichlorn's website of the National Cancer Research Foundation: www.ncrf.org for more information. My husband with Stage 4 esophageal cancer started it 2 weeks ago. Within 2 days, he felt terriffic -he had his color back and lots of energy. I'm not sick but I started taking it too and I also feel great. So, if sick or not, I think it's great. He has since refused to see me since I have turned chemo down. He says if I want to kill myself then so be it! I will not give my opinion on that!

The Immpower that I am on is a wonderful achh product something like MGM3. I get it at my health food store. It really works. I also take colloidal silver

I don't know anything about this coral-calcium, but I will look into it. I too am a stage IV Lung Cancer patient diagnosed 10/02...I am a young patient - one that this disease is rare in...39yrs.old...female and avid NON-SMOKER! I've gone through 6 months of Clinical Trials-chemotherapy and am now on Iressa. So far I've had nearly miraculous results...My Oncologist nearly fell off his chair when he read my first Ct-scan results after only being on Iressa for 3 months...Most of the numerous tumors were gone and the few that are left have shrunk by 50%...My next follow-up is next month...Hope to have continued success!

About the sugar, my Oncologist's ordered me to eat anything and everything when I was first diagnosed while undergoing Chemotherapy...especially high fatty foods. The trouble is, I am a healthy eater but I gained nearly 40 lbs. after my 2nd round of Chemo-Taxotere and taking Steroids that were supposed to aid me with this new Chemo. The Steroids caused me to gain 2-3 lbs. a week...increased my appetite...craving carbo's/sugars...Now I can't seem to lose the weight, but my doctor's aren't concerned. I guess it's better to have a little extra weight than to lose a lot of weight. The main thing is...I'm still alive and kicking...not what the first doctor's who originally diagnosed me thought possible. I will be monitoring my sugar intake from now on. Best of luck to you and your husband and thanks for putting the info about the coral-calcium online...maybe it will help.

Hi Donna,
I saw your message and I have renal cell carcinoma. I was first told Jan. 2001 and had my kidney removed 2/01. Then in Jan 02 I was told the tumor grew back in the renal bed and went to my lungs. I was on interferon A for about 9 months. I was then put on chemotherapy but had a real bad allergic reaction. So now I am on Thalomid. I also take coral calcium, Lypocene and other supplements. I am getting a nutritional manual from this web site. I also have Dr. Michael Gordon working with my oncologist. Dr. Gordon specializes in kidney cancer and other rare cancers. There is also the Kidney Cancer association web site. There is also the Accurian Web site, which gives info on trial treatments.

Dear Kim,
I found your reply very interesting because I have been fighting colon cancer for over 5 years and am now trying to watch sugar intake. I find it very difficult. I have stopped obvious sugar i.e. candy, cake, cookies, etc. and white bread, rice, potato and flour. But I do get some grams of sugar in the day. I love my tea and coffee (we need some vices) and I use milk and Splenda. Also, I heard a person speak at a meeting and said the same thing you said about the rise in blood sugar. My question is can I still use some grams of sugar or must it all be cut out?

Dear William,

It sounds as if you have been very vigilant in making sound dietary changes.
To answer you question: No--you do not need to limit all sugar. If you did, you
would have to avoid all fruit, milk or yogurt (these foods contain natural
sugars!) Instead, try to consume no more than 5-10% of your calories from
refined sugars; concentrate on whole grains, and as I mentioned before, eat
any high sugar foods with a protein based meal.

You have taught me so much already. Like William, I have been trying to avoid every bit of sugar I can. Your book explained how I could add some items containing sugar in with a protein-based meal. Hurray! I added three strawberries and a small piece of cantalope to my meal last night. How refreshing. And you were right. I didn't get that insulin rush that makes me crave more sugar.
Dear Janis,

Does sugar feed cancer? Well....not like you might think! Too much dietary sugar can impact immunity, but eating smaller amounts of sugar (such as honey) with a protein based meal (such as yogurt and nuts) are quite acceptable and provides the body with enough mixed fuel to keep blood sugars stable. You can read more about the sugar feeds cancer theory on my website under frequently asked questions. Please visit www.challengecancer.com.

RE: Web site for Sugar feeds cancer info

I too cut out sugar (and increased my quota of Vit-C from the pathetic RDA) and now feel so much better as a result. Where normally I am prone to every infection going and several nasty colds a year, I have happily sat in a office full of people, who for weeks were coughing their insides out (and all over me), without the least sign of its effect.

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Even attempting this can only have positive consquences.

Another thing about cancer, and why a high blood sugar is dangerous, is that a cancer cell has far more glucose receptors on it than its healthy equivalent. (This is one of the fundamental factors IPT takes advantage of) The consequence, then, of eating sugar(fruit or otherwise)/refined carbohydrates without something (proteins) to slow their injestion is that cancer cells get much more from the deal than your healthy cells. It is partly to do with the way cancer cells metabolize; they cannot use some of the things healthy cells do, e.g. oxygen, so proliferate via other means.

Should you eat sugar/refined carbs? One author, I think, expressed the situation very well with the following analogy:

If you had a rude, dirty and unwanted squatter camped in your living room, would you order them cable and continually re-stock the fridge with pizza and beer while seriously hoping he/she's going to get up and leave?

NO!

Emory hospital in Atlanta where my father received his transplant is really good with Kidney patients, I was also told there is a Veterans hospital in Houston that is great as well. & there are treatment centers in Phoenix that are also good with Kidney growths etc. I hope this helps.

The reason they don't want us to reduce our sugar intake is because the health care industry would reduce their income. More doctors, more oil based drugs. If we were all taught nutrition as a precaution they would all be out of money and out of work.
