Treatment Advised

The first thing you father must do is to find a doctor that is experienced in treating metastatic renal cell cancer; this is especially important if he has a less common type of kidney cancer, which will probably not be known until the tumor is removed. The kidney cancer association has a list of experienced docs; call them at 800-850-9132 for a doctor near you (some very good doctors are not on their list). You will probably want both a urologist, who will remove the kidney), and an oncologist who can treat the cancer at distant sites. The oncologist, especially, will need experience in treating kidney cancer patients.

There is an email support list specific to kidney cancer; join it at http://cancerguide.org/kofaq/ . Other list members can tell you more about their experiences. More information about kidney cancer can be found at http://cancerguide.org/kidney.html.
