Dad Says he Has Liver Cancer

My heart goes out to all of you who are suffering or have loved ones who are suffering from this. I lost my mom to kidney failure in 2000, and to this day I am still mourning her death. She was my best friend, and its like it took her suddenly. Now my dad is saying that the doctors are saying that he is at the last stages of liver cancer and only has 3 months to live. He did not want me to know or his girlfriend, but the other family knows of this. Please do not take this offensively, but the reason for my going on this site was to read true stories of those with this type of cancer to learn more about it. I read that people get really sick at the last stages. Now my dad has not lost any weight, and I talked to his girlfriend today, and she is not supposed to know so I asked her how was he doing. She said Oh fine, he's out looking for a job. Then I asked her has he lost any weight? She said no, we EAT. So basically I need to know at the last stages of liver cancer, does it cause you to be so sick to the point were you are not able to do anything? I just hope that he is not pretending to have this. My husband is trying to find an herb that can maybe cure him of this. He is looking through a book by Ron Teeguarden's Dragon Herbs. Does anyone believe in herbs? Once again, my prayers are for those with liver cancer.

Thoughts

primary liver cancer is very rare. more than likely he has something else, like colon cancer, that has spread to his liver.

herbs don't cure cancer. that is foolishness.

if he really has only a few months left to live, you should sit down with him and talk to him and spend as much time as you can with him. tell him you love him. say whatever you need to say to him.

the one exception to the rule about liver cancer being exceptionally rare is hepatitis b and hepatitis c. these two diseases are caused by viruses that one usually acquires by unprotected sex (although blood transfusions and needle-sticks can do it too). many years after contracting these viruses, they can cause primary liver cancer.

if he does have a primary hepatitis, both he and his girlfriend should be tested for hepatitis b and c.

Reply

thank you very much for responding. I really don't know much about liver cancer, I did look that info up on the internet, and it did say you will have several symptoms like loss of appetite, weight loss, and tiredness. I talked to my aunt about the situation, and I'm glad you brought up hepatitis, because I believe she did say that he had that. I forgot what type, but she did say that. I did not know that that could turn into cancer. And I wonder why he has not gotten treatment for that. My dad does not talk about things like that. I guess he may feel that it is too personal, but I want to know. You know my mom died of kidney failure in 2000, and my my grandmother of pancreatic cancer in 1999, and it still troubles me. I do know that when my grandmother was in the last stages, she lost over 80 pounds, and she was very weak, she even went blind! My dad has none of these symptoms. Could you die from hepatitis?

Hepatitis

yes, hepatitis generally causes a slow death. it may take 20 years to kill someone. but once they have a hepatoma (primary liver cancer) they will die in a year or so. however, if the liver tumor has not spread, it can be surgically removed and the person can be cured of the liver cancer.

there are some famous people with viral hepatitis such as tommy lee and pamela anderson. hepatitis is very easy to contract sexually. probably anyone they have slept with have it too, unless they were very careful and used condoms every time.

there are some treatments available for viral hepatitis that may slow it down considerably, such as interferon (a shot you give yourself a few times a week for a year or so).

your dad's secrecy about all this is puzzling. does he just want to die and leave all his loved ones without the benefit of having had a meaningful last conversation to discuss feelings and emotions?

i don't get it.

Attitude is Key

you need to support your dad, fess up you know and help him seek treatment. if he needs surgery or even if he doesn't think it is possible, try to get him to university of pittsburgh medical center liver cancer center (good for mets as well as primary) to dr. david geller.....he is amazing and will help you find the right answers! check out the internet...this place is fabulous.

i am Sorry That Your Dad Has Liver Cancer

My husband had primary liver cancer; however, the lesion was in a location that was easily removed by a liver surgeon. If your dad has a liver cancer and if the doctor said he could not do anything for him, it might mean that your dad's cancer is in an advanced stage already. Sometimes the cancer lesion is in a location (middle section) of the liver that makes it hard for a surgeon to remove it. In this case, other treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, or radiofrequency ablation can still be done to extend the life of a cancer patient. Find out the type of cancer your dad has: either cholangio carninoma or hepatocellular carcinoma, then go in the web and read more about it. My prayer is with you and your family.

Once again, my prayers are for those with liver cancer. My dad sadly passed away 3 weeks ago (19/12/2006) due to bladder and liver cancer. He was diagnosed in August 2006 but had advanced stages so unfortunately there was nothing that could be done for him. He was in a wheelchair prior to this so he would not have seen or felt alot of the early signs that others such as your dad, who i am assuming is able bodied, should notice. Now i'm no expert and wouldn't dream of stating that your dad has or has not got liver cancer and can only draw from my experience, so the only thing i will state is that at the same stage my dad was extremely ill and losing weight quite rapidly. He also had a stoma bag to bypass the bowel and a tube coming out of his kidney to bypass the bladder. Also in his final days he was violently sick, vomiting unrecognisable substances that i wouldn't even hazard a guess at what they were.I'm only telling you all this so you have something to compare to, and i truly hope he is ok as i wouldn't wish this upon you or anyone else.I hope this information is of some use and i wish you well.Warm Regards.
