Alternative Treatments

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in July after allowing my doctors convince me to just watch a thickening of the tissues because they said it wasn't cancer. We watched it for a year and then I insisted it be removed only to find I had an 8 cm tumor and cancer in 22 lymph nodes. I had a pet scan and it was clear so there are no tumors in any other parts of my body. I am refused to have chemo and am scheduled for simulation on Monday so I can start radiation and then follow with hormone therapy. I have been taking mangosteen juice for 2 months and started Barley Life on the 17th of August. I am also taking artemisinin and will be having vitamin c infusions after my radiation. I believe that if I build my body up with proper nutrition instead of distroying it with chemotherapy I will have a better chance of survival. It also is important to keep your body in an alkaline state and stay away from any white foods (white sugar, salt, flour etc). My prayers are with all of you.....

Thoughts

dear jackie,

your doctors let your down by not finding the cancer sooner. that is malpractice. that is quite sad.

you have chosen a dangerous path. you are only going to have radiotherapy, you have declined chemotherapy, and you are putting your faith and life in the hands of con artists who are looking to only to sell you their products. they have done a good job of that. you seem totally brainwashed.

During the year before you were diagnosed, we know that the breast cancer cells spread to 22 lymph nodes. That is a lot of lymph nodes. It is certainly within the realm of possibility that one or more cancer cell slipped past a lymph node and spread to your brain, lungs, or liver. they had a year to do it. that is a long time. if most of the lymph nodes were over-run with cancer, their ability to prevent more cancer cells from slipping through would be impaired. think about it.

These microscopic cancer cells are growing at the same rate that your initial cancer grew. Since you did not describe a cancer the size of a baseball after a year of growth, I would guess your cancer cells are growing slowly. So any cancer cells that spread to the brain, lungs, or liver have developed by now only into a small nest of cells the size of the head of a pin. Still too small to be seen by PET scan which cannot see things smaller than the size of a marble.

You have chosen radiation. They are not going to radiate your brain, lungs, or liver. They are not going to radiate anything except your chest and armpit. Any cancer cells outside this small area are not going to be affected by the radiation and will continue to grow unchecked.

The reason for the chemotherapy that you refused is to clean up rogue cancer cells in places that are not radiated, such as the brain, lungs, and liver. (don't even think about radiating things like the liver - radiation would destroy the liver completely before killing the cancer cells.)

If there are any cancer cells left in your chest or armpit, they may be killed by the radiation. You have chosen to not take the chemo to kill cancer cells that may be elsewhere. The alternative products you mentioned have no value whatsoever. In fact, since they are giving you a false sense of hope, perhaps your decision to refuse chemotherapy was in part supported by your feeling that the alternative products might accomplish the same thing as the chemotherapy, but in a less toxic way, which they will not, for they are worthless and do nothing.

basically, you are young and ignorant, and easily fooled by con artists. everyone was young and ignorant once. it is not a crime. but you are risking you life on something that does not work.

your primary care doctor is an idiot for not picking up on the cancer sooner. anyone recommended by an idiot is an idiot, so the oncologist you are seeing is an idiot until proven otherwise. so you need to ditch them both.

what you need to do: get a second opinion from a top cancer center. where do you live? at the bottom of this post is a link to the top 50 cancer centers in the country, and i have listed the top 10 in this reply as well. they all have web sites and you can make an appointment on their web sites or by phone, and they all have appointment phone lines with the numbers listed on the web sites. have an open mind, listen to what they say, do not be afraid to ask questions, take a close friend or a parent to listen to them as well, and everyone take notes so you can review later things that were said. bring pads of paper and pens. make a list of questions for the doctor.

commentary: you can be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams if you sue the well meaning moron that missed your cancer for a year. picture in your mind seeing a poor young female with cancer at one table, and an old rich doctor who missed diagnosing it for a YEAR at the other table. pretend you were a juror. even before hearing the facts of the case, who would YOU award the money to? yes, that is how it works. even if there was good reason to have missed the diagnosis, jurors would not care. they wish to take the money from the faceless rich malpractice insurance company, and give it to the poor girl with the cancer. you and your lawyer would easily walk out of there with many many millions of dollars (unless you live in wisconsin, indiana, south carolina, or a few other states with intelligent tort reform laws).

this link has a story of a woman who
died from treating her breast cancer
with natural products. read it.

Unfortunately, there are many people who make unfounded claims so they may profit from the misfortune of others. This is the case with mangosteen juice and many other natural products. In my opinion, the single largest advance in medicine in the last hundred years isn't vaccines or antibiotics, it is the randomized clinical trial. A randomized trial is the only way to determine whether or not a treatment is effective. Somebody stating "this treatment worked for me" is what is known as 'testimonial evidence' and is statistically invalid. I urge you to view unproven treatments with a high degree of suspicion and thoroughly investigate the scientific basis of those claims. Good luck.

here they are. if someplace is close-by, go there. if it means a plane ride to any of them, might as well take a plane ride to #1 or #2.

Jackie,
I believe that there are things you can take that help with your battle with cancer, but some of the things you mention are sales schemes to market a product. They probably will not do you any harm, but I do not know how much good they will do. I was stage IV lung cancer and the only treatment available to me was chemo. You do not know for sure how it will affect you till you try it. The nice thing about it is that it does work for a lot of people. I took supplements and herbs along with my chemo. Some of them are purported to help with side effects. You can look them up on the Sloan Kettering web site. I have been cancer free since November 2005. I had no bad side effects from my chemo which consisted of Carboplatin, Taxol and Tarceva. I would never just rely on supplements or herbs. I would also get a second opinion. I do not think you have too much confidence in the ones you have. My story is posted on the Lance Armstrong web site. You can go to my story then you will be able to e-mail me.
Alternative Treatments.

Dear Amnia,

I am sorry you feel that way. My doctors did fail me in not identifiny this tumor as cancer but to sue them would not change the situation. Also, I am not putting my faith is quacks I'm putting my faith is my Heavenly Father. I have received some very powerful Priesthood blessings and know that my Heavenly Father is very aware of me and is guiding me in all my decissions.

The alternative methods I am persuing have been documented by doctors not salesmen and scientific studies have been done. They just haven't been approved by the FDA because they save money not cost money. Each chemothearpy session costs $11,000.00 dollars and although I don't say they don't work, they do however make lots of money also. There are doctors now using smaller doses and even homeopathic doses that also work and save thousands of dollars.

I am doing all the research I can to make informed and appropriate decissions and trust in Heavenly Father's love to help me do what is right for me. Thank you, Jackie

Dear Amnia,

Just another note I forgot to mention. The Pet Scan is much more accurate than you give it credit. It can detect cancer activity at the cell level, way before it even becomes a tumor much less reaches marble size.

I do appreciate your concern and hope the best for you..........Jackie

Alternatives

Hey Dad,

Thank you so much for the web sites and the support. It is very refreshing to hear from some one who doesn't believe the sun rises and sets on the drug companies of the world.

I believe that there are good uses for chemotherapy and all other drugs, after you have exhausted all other alternatives to foreign chemicals. I choose to build my body up so that it can heal itself as God intended and am very grateful to all those who have the courage to try to do it themselves.

God Bless You, Jackie

Thoughts

you said:
"Just another note I forgot to mention. The Pet Scan is much more accurate than you give it credit. It can detect cancer activity at the cell level."

PET SCAN FUN FACTS:
----------------------------------
when FDG radioactively decays in cancer cells it emits a positron which combines with an electron. both the electron and the positron are converted from matter to energy to form two 511 keV photons. A PET scan detects 511 keV photons.

however, normal cells also uptake FDG, but at a much lower rate than cancer cells. to distinguish between normal and cancer requires a tumor to be at least of a certain size or larger.

this minimum tumor diameter that can be reliably identified by the current third generation of PET scanners is 4 mm in diameter. a tumor that is 4 mm in diameter contains approximately 5x10^8 cancer cells.

the PET facility can give you your PET scan on a disc and you can view it at home on your PC. You can't do all extensive image reconstruction with the software on this disc, but you can view all of the 2D slices and the 3D rotating body. if there are any combination PET/CT facilities in your area, choose them for future scans. they do both the PET and a 16-slice CT or better at the same time, and merge the two sets of data giving a very accurate study.

keep us posted. best of luck to you.

Thoughts

I thought I remembered reading on this board about a PET scan that missed a cancer because the cancer was too small. This person's cancer was less than 0.5 cm (=5mm) in size and was missed.

http://www.cancercompass.com/message-board/message/all,6887,0.htm

"...because the tumor was less than a half of a centimeter in size that that is why none of the scans picked it up. He said that usually PET Scans do not pick up a tumor until they are about 1 centimeter in size."

this person was likely scanned on an older PET scanner, probably not a combination PET/CT machine. had this person been scanned on a 3rd generation PET scanner, the tumor was actually just barely large enough that it might have been found.

this goes back to my belief that going to top cancer places for treatment gives better results. top places have the latest technology and the cutting edge treatments. had this person gone to MD Anderson or Sloan-Kettering, he would have gotten a better PET scan.

Alternatives

Hi Jackie,

My husband was recently diagnosed with brain cancer and he refused the conventional treatment and has been doing only alternative.. very successful. His MRI looked good..

Anyway, try www.cancertutor.com. Very informative. I do also believe that ultimately God is the healer.. He will lead us to the right path to make the right decisions.

take care and God Bless,

Alternative Treatment

Dear Jackie,

I am so glad to hear you are trusting our Heavenly Father for your healing. I believe He loves us so much that of course He will guide each of to go in the direction He wants to go for our healing. I have stage iv metastic melanoma and am using holistic products and looking into Vitamin C IV treatments. But He has given me so much peace about the whole thing. When we know Him, we win no matter what happens!

I'm praying for you.

God gless you,

Pet Scan

Amnia

I talked to my doctor and she said the pet scan can pick up a tumor when it is just 3 or 4 millimeters in size. Also that is why you have cancer markers and blood tests done so that all the test combined will pick up any changes so that further test can be done.

I found an article about a study done at Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center that shows Curcumin halts the spread of breast cancer in mice. It also reversed the effects of pacilitaxel (TaxolTM), a commonly prescribed chemotherapy for breast cancer that may trigger spread of the disease with use over a long period of time.

Curcumin is the main ingredient of tumeric, the same household spice we use all the time.

I am taking it now along with my other supplements.

RE: Alternative Treatments

I don't know if this will help him or not different things work for different people.I have or had colo/rectal cancer and did radiation and 11 days of chemo. The person showing the Quackwatch is trying to help and there are MAY that do not work, however the are many that DO.I am not trying to sell anything just tell my story and it's success! I wrote the Quackwatch guy years ago when I read they he thought homepathic remedies were fake and made a challange to take some detox remedies for a few days and in fact since he said it does nothing to dbl the does and see in a few days when he gets sick and says it is just a co incidence to wait a week and try again, I assure you you will get sick from the toxins and he declined to give it a try.I also asked him why a well know English medical journal had an article on how they poured a bucket of blood into the open ocean and sharkes turned and headded for it immediatly, and how could that happen if there were not some sort of bioenergetic they detected becaiuse none of the blood could possibly be reaced that far away ever least wise instantly. His answer "I don't know I just know it doesn't work" SO even people who you THINK are looking out for you are not always reasonable or properly informed.Back to my experience with my tumourThey said it was still pretty big and want to do some pretty radical surgery.I decided to go the natural rounte and keep and eye on it with std medical dr's also.Mine now appears to be completely gone in a matter of weeks and I feel really good.Like I said it isn't for everyone but , here is what all I did and I am not sure what all did it but I'll list first the 3 main things I beleive did the most good.(1)Immunocal -It boost glutathione (FDA APPROVED) , or rather causes you own body to produce it. The pills are mostly destroyed in your stomach , so this works best.(2) Graviola- from online or many health food stores have it , it really boosted the progress from me and it is called a natural chemo and the only side affect I can find is that it toxifies the live with the debrie from the cancer (which is good in itself)(3) A good liver cleans product to clear out the toxins from the cancer debrie.I also changed my diet, on BIGGIE is NO SUGAR!! Use stevia instead it is even good for diabetics. Cancer thrives on SUGAR , and in fact that is from what I understnd how a PET scan works at looking at high glucose activity. Also the phrase they used on me w/colon cancer was "No Meat,no wheat and no sweets" No or very little red meat and try to get all organic as much as poossible.Another biggie is try to get alkaline, cancer thrives in acid and can't live in alkaline inviroment. I got an alkaline water filter , they are expense but well worth it.Also I juice , carrots/beets/celery and apple together and put in some graviola in the drive (Liquid form) Hope this is not too much , I am not selling anything even though I now dist. Immunocal I won't mention my website unless you ask.All I can say is it WWORKED FOR ME and I want to tell other!Tha and hope all goes well.Dennis--- Message edited by CancerCompass staff: for personal protection, email address removed. Please review CancerCompass Member Guidelines at http://www.cancercompass.com/common/guidelines.html ----
