Pleura Effusion

I have stage iv lung cancer with pleura effusion and I was told to have all the fluid drained from off my lung. I have been drained 5 times before but this will be the first time having all the fluid out. Now, I need to know if any has had a tube inserted in their side surgically? I find the thoracenthesis (drainage) very painful and I requested that I be put to sleep this time around when I'm having all the fluid out. I have had up to 2.5 litres drained in one setting and I would cough a lot whild it's been done. Since of late I have been experiencing a lot of paid during the procedure. Anyone out there who has done this before? Is it safe to go to sleep while it's been done.. Just looking for answers? I will be having the surgery on Thursday of this week.
