Newbie Here, Liver Mri Results, Questions Please

Hello to All,
I'm new to the board and so glad I found this place! I've been reading messages here and it sure seems there's alot of knowledgable folks here. I have a few questions in hopes maybe someone could shade some light on my Liver MRI Results.

In 1999 I had a liver biopsy that came back with early cirrhosis, yet, my Gastro said even tho the biopsy said "early cirrhosis" that I did not have cirrhosis yet but was ont he vergue of it starting. My ALT & Ast's have staied in the 40's range, slightly elevated. As of 2006 all liver enzymes are all in normal range.

Over the past few years I've had several Ultra Sounds on my liver, all of which have come back unremarkable. September 2006 I had aan MRI of the liver showing a 8 mm lesion on the right lobe.

My regular MD didn't seem to concern about this lesion and I'm scared to death that it may be cancer!

Here is my results of the Liver MRI...does anyone have a clue as to what it all means? All suggestion are greatly welcomed.

FINDINGS:

The liver demonstrates a single 8 mm well-circumscribed lesion within the right lobe demonstrating low T1 and homogeneous high T2 consistent with a cyst. The liver is otherwise homogeneous in unenhanced signal. There is no intraheptic biliary dilatation.

The spleen, adrenals and pancreas are normal in appearance. The gallbladder is not identified and presumed surgically absent. The kidneys are normal in appearance without hydronephrosis. The visualized thoracolumbar spine demonstrates normal marrow signal.

IMPRESSION:
1. Limited examination of the liver without intravenous gadolinium administration.
2. Subcentimeter hepatic cyst with the right lobe.

Mri

sounds good to me. Your MRI shows a cyst which could have various causes and therefore various treatments. You may not need any treatment at all, but the good news is that its not cancer!

RE: Newbie Here, Liver Mri Results, Questions Please

It SOUNDS like your Dr. is right and it's not cancer as your liver enzymes really start going out of whack quickly when its hit like that, but this is one case where if he's wrong and you wait very long at all (even a few months) you WILL DIE. So go see a specialist and either do a biopsy or insist on RFA or Targeted Radiation therapy to either burn out the cyst or kill off the tumor whichever it is if you think there is a chance it could be cancer. Most likely it is indeed just a cyst and your Dr. is worred that any invasion will harm an already weakened liver and cause more damage then its worth - but YOU need to be the one to make that call, and you need to research and know what you're dealing with so you can make an EDUCATED call. Lots out there on the web ... and while I'm not a Dr. I "Play one" since starting to fight my liver metastases some 26 months ago!
