Diagnoised cancer, no symptoms, What can be the worst?

I found this very useful site when my husband, age 55, was diagnoised with stomach cancer a week ago by endoscopy. The first one was " susppicious for malignancy"The 2nd one was " poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with signet-ring cell feature"CAT scan show thickening of stomach wall. Other than that, other organs were ok.There is no symptoms from the stomach. He feel good and healthy. They can only tell the stage at the surgery? He like to have a endoscopy ultrasound done b4 the surgery. How accurate is it?My questions are:1) What is the worst stage I can expect?2) What is the symptoms when u or ur love one was diagnoised? What was the stage when surgery was performed.I am really scary and like to learn from your experience. I really appreciated if you can sharing experience with us. Thank you very much.Jen14

Irena, Thank you very much for your sharing. 1)I ate less meat and more vegetable in last 2 years. I lose some wight in one and half years. 2) I always want to do one endoscopy. My GI discouraged me to do it bc I didn't have pain 3 years ago. I got a new GI and did it. I know it is not a standard procedure. Your information really help me a lot so I can prepare for it. I really apprecate it. Wish you and your fater the best.ssc

Hi Im new to this but when i googled my grandfathers symptoms, your page came up. He recently went to the doctor for a ct scan for unusual weight loss. He has lost 15lbs in a short period of time and is not in any pain. The CT shows a thickening in the stomach wall. He said it cold be a mass of some sort putting pessure on his stomach and the doctor said he now has to go in for an upper GI which I have read to be a normal procedure for gastric cancer. I was just curious to know if the same thing happened to someone else? Same problems but no real pain? I am really looking for another problem but with the weight loss and stomach wall growth, theres not to many possibilities. He is 79years old but is healthy, doesn't smoke nor drink. He exercises 3days a week at a gym, but his brother died a few years ago from colon cancer and he has been going regularly for colon checks for polyps and such. Any information would be great, I just want to prepare myself for what is to come. thank you very much for your time.

RE: Diagnoised cancer, no symptoms, What can be the worst?

This may sound cold, but, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. There are so many variables, so many you couldn't possibly have time to post. The beginning and not knowing is the hardest. Doing research on his symtoms is the best you can do. Meaning, reasearch everything!!! Go into the doctors armed. Ask a million questions and make sure you understand the answer. I have said this before here - 15 minutes is not long enough to have your Doctor give him and your family the info you need to satisfy any doubts or concerns. If he/she says, we just dont know that yet, ask why. If you gives you a medical reason, you tell him you don't understand what he means by that. Then you do, the, "Then what?" Hopefully it is something that can be treated. If he does not say this right away, after all the whys, and posible evasive answers - they don;t want to say the wrong thing - but you all deserve to know "it may be". Then, when you go the desk, sign necessary paperwork and get your next appointment, it better be within a week. Even if "it could be nothing" . Waiting is unaccptable. Get answers, research, go in armed - NICE - but ready with questions. Good Luck friend and God bless - Keep us informed.

In order to diag and treat early, he has to:1. do a upper endoscopy. It takes 15 minutes and dr will biopsy the suspicious area and determine if it is cancer.2. For the worst case, if it is, the earlier the better to treat. Survival rate is very high if it is stage 1 and 2.I read most reserch report and had my stomach removed recently. Please arrange to have your grandfather do an endoscopy immediately. Depending on the outcome, endoscopy ultrasound may be next. I think, to save time, do an endoscopy ultrasound if he can do it quickly. It will do endoscopy and also guess the depth of infiltration of tumor and lymph nodes. Where do you or your granfather live? Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Good luck and hope it is not cancerous.ssc

RE: Diagnoised cancer, no symptoms, What can be the worst?

Thank you for your tips. We live in Philadelphia,PA. We have great hospitals for treatment, but I was just hoping it is anything but cancer. Our family recently went through a death in our family to brain cancer. My uncle, who was only 49 was diagnosed with brain cancer and given 9months. We tried everything, even traveled to Duke University for an experiment medicine but nine months later he passed. My mom has six sisters, all of which are married, so you can see how loosing a brother in law was difficult for our family. Our family has jsutbeen getting bck to normal and this would set it back a bit, but we can only hope for the best. I hope everything goes better for you and I will let you know the results on Monday with the upper GI. Thank you again for all your inspiration. Stay strong.

Thickening of stomach wall is linitis plastica. That's what my mom has. It's the worst stomach cancer out there according to the medical oncologist. If the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, then cancer is stage 3. If the lymph nodes have cancer, it's stage 4. We discovered it when my mom had trouble ingesting food. She would pretty much throw up everything she ate bc she developed a tumor. If it's stage 4, which you won't find out til during the surgery, do alot of praying and hope that chemo works.
