I am 3 years post op and I also have a cough.   I cough alot when I am eating and I had my surgeon do a endoscopy because I felt there was something triggering the cough and I could feel it when I swallowed. He found nothing. I can eat soup with no problems. When I go out to eat, that is what I have.  My surgeon said there really is nothing that can be done about it.  He says it is caused by ...

Hi Jane,  My surgery was on Sept. 11 2009 and on Sept. 30th the doctor removed my feeding tube and from that point on, I tried different foods every day...I can pretty much eat everything now.  I am still going through small changes even now, 3 years later.I have in the past 3 years maintained my weight. In total I have lost only 10 lbs from before the surgery.   I also use a wedge pillow and...

Hi Becky,  I also had a esophagectomy with gastric pullup. I was stage 1 and I had the feeding tube put in during the surgery 9/11/09 and came home from the hospital 9/18 and when I went back to see the surgeon on 9/30 he removed the feeding tube.  I did not have any problems with weight loss..I did throw up once in a while but that was due to me eating too much at one sitting...I found it very hard to chan...

I had my surgery 9/11/09 ( I was also 63). I went in on a Friday and came home the following Friday. I had the same surgery...about 2/3 of my esophagus was removed and had stomach pullup. What I  have to this day is a cough.  A year after, I had my surgeon do a endoscopy to see if he could find the reason for the cough. He said it is caused by reflux.  This September will be 3 years and I still cough.....

I agree....  Mass General is fantastic....I went there and they were just great.  I had my surgery done there and I now go back once a year for my ct scan and to see my surgeon.  I am biased also.

I have a question also...my stomach has not been digesting food as it should.  I take protonix, 1 40 mg in the morning and 1 at night.  Do you think the reason is because of the amount of Protonix that I am taking? Should I ask my doctor about taking less? Carol

Hi Sandman, I had my esophagectomy 2 1/2 years ago and I developed a cough.  Not happy about this...I seem to do most of my coughing while eating and shortly after eating.  Doctors told me it was reflux...I take protonix twice a day and carafate and sleep elevated...still I have the cough...I even had my surgeon go back down my esophagus and take a look to see if he could find a reason for the cough...no l...

that's good news Eric...I just found out myself that I have Esophagitis and not Barretts....thank goodness.  I have had so many Biopsies that I think that is the reason for the inflammation.  I am having another scope in March....I sure hope all is well then...so far I seem to be doing pretty good.I am still a little anemic (I think I have been doing a little bleeding in the esophagus caused from all the bi...

                      Esophageal Cancer
                      After Treatment, Side Effects

I am 65 years old and was diagnosed with EC August of 09. I caught it early and it was stage 1. I had 3/4 of my esophagus removed and my stomach was brought up into my chest and reconnected to the esophagus. Today I am still cancer free. I have been having a cat scan every 6 months and my next one is in March 2011. I have had different side effects come and go over the months. Right now I am dealing with a cough while eating and shortly after eating. I am hoping this will in time go away. March 2011 scans came out fine.
I am still dealing with the cough. My two year scan will be September 2011. Had my 2 year scan and all is good. Still cancer free. I am now going to have a scan and will see my surgeon once a year. I do have severe erosion of the esophagus with ulceration and my GI doctor is taking care of this. I am taking 80mg of Protonix twice a day and carafate 4 times a day. I hope this will all heal okay. I did not even know I had this going on. I had no symptoms whatsoever...except acid reflux once in awhile that would reach my throat. GI doctor says I have GERD and I will now check on a GERD diet and see if that will help.I had my 3year cat scan and I am cancer free.next one is in one year Sept. 2013.
