by Joanie33 - December 11 at 6:49 PM

I wrote in a long time ago asking for advise to relieve pain in neck caused by radiation treatment after having the mandable ? removed. nothing worked Are there any new sugestions that may help ? Apart from the side of my neck, the tightness ( noose I call it ) goes from under my chin  right down past the adams apple It is unbearable.I had another dilation last week, but that isnt meant to help fibrosis as we all know ,Any advise PLEASE ----joanie33

The lower lobe in my left lung was removed two years ago.  Chemo was not required after this surgery. I have CAT scans every 6 mos. and now have a tumor in the middle of my right lung.  I have passed my stress test and I am waiting for my  surgeon's decision. If this cancer has not spread from my left lung is there a possible of just removing the tumor or could more drastic surgery be required?  This will be the fourth time that I have had cancer.

Thanks, Charles

Thank you Charles for your mail re the lung cancer . I just saw your new message about your having another tumor in the right lung. I told you my husband had the complete lung removed ,but that lung was the one he also had the upper lobe removed from -----TEN years before. He had a very good run with that length of time, and yes , when it did return and they took the whole thing, he has done quite well really. It is also his fourth bout of cancer. Lung twice ,prostate skin, but he has fought it all the way  and I`m sure after what you have gone through , you will likely be a lot like him ( You sound it to me )

I hope your results and surgeon`s decision are very favorable, Please keep us informed .

Best of luck to you Charles

Lung Removal

by Joanie33 - September 05 at 5:24 PM

I would like to find out if anyone has had a complete lung removed. ? My husband had it done ( his right lung ) along with five ribs  on Dec 29th-2011. He gets lots of pain in the rt shoulder and still has coughing spells, though a Pet scan is showing no signs of cancer anywhere in his body .

I am a member of Cancer compass myself under the head and neck section, but I would like any replies for my husband under the lung section.

Hi bobbykins. Can you explain a little more on what your simptoms are for the problem you are told is called wooden neck ! I have a very painful neck and had 4 throat dilations . My treatment finished July 4th 2008.  I`m told mine is fibrosis now.,and there is no cure . I just wonder if you explain to me more that may be what you have . I have never heard of wooden neck !!

Hi Debbie, We sound to be suffering very much the same. I had my jaw bone removed and a leg bone put in it`s place, followed also by radiation. My saliva glands were ruined with the radiation,so my mouth is also constantly dry. I don`t get enough sleep either because I have to get up so often during the night.

I am so sorry for you Debbie because all your discomfort started early after the treatment was over. At least mine was almost 2yrs before it started to get bad, but I`m upset that it continues to get worse . I honestly don`t know how much more i can take!!

If I get any advise that really helps me, I sure will let you know.

Hi Roger, Thanks for your reply . My husband and I  say all the time," We know the cause of the problem ,but after all these years, wouldn`t you think they might have come up with something to ease people`s pain a little " ??

I didn`t have chemo, just radiation, but I was burned so badly my left shoulder muscles are completely gone. Clothing simply wont stay on that shoulder.

I will look for the book you mention. I do drink Ensure each day that is full of vitamins .

I should mention I live in Canada ,just 10mins away from Michigan  driving on the Blue Water Bridge .

It was good to hear from you -----Thanks.

Joanie,

I can't understand why more patients are not complaining about this symptom.  Each day I struggle with pain and strange sensations coming from within my neck muscles.  I did not have a neck dissection.  I don't think I could have handled it.

From a remedy point of view it seems like Aleve (naproxen sodium) does help.  Most of the literature that I have read says that massage/palpitation of the neck muscles helps some people.  In my case I don't like to be touched by people that I do not know.  It is bad enough to have to surrender to the doctors and medical technitions.  Sorry for the digression.

Mark

Hi Mark,

I agree, I can`t understand the lack of complaints either. I`m told that the fibrosis in the neck is spasms in the muscles. There is no cure for them and it can get worse !!!

Do you have the feeling of a noose around the neck that just gets tighter and tighter ??

I don`t know what your original problem was, but I presume you had radiation that has caused this ......right ?

I cannot take any anti-inflamatory medication because of a previous stomach ulcer, so I`m out of luck with Aleve.

Keep in touch Mark, and if I find anything that helps you can be sure you will hear from me.

Thanks for this reply, very helpful.  I had radiation 3 months after my original surgery 3 years ago so my neck has already been "blasted".  I assume that I would not need anymore radiation (at least I hope not, radiation is really destructive).  Why did you have radiation along with the jaw replacement ? You comment about the gum is interesting.  I need to question my surgeon about this.  I had the opportunity to have this jaw replacement surgery 6 months ago but walked away from it because it is a major piece of work.  Now that my jaw is continuing to move sideways, I will have to face up to it.

Hi,Me again.   ....I found out I had cancer after having a tooth pulled .The hole just wouldn`t heal, plus I had a tiny white spot on the floor of my mouth.I saw my GP who decided to send me to an ENT. A biopsy was done and I was told it was cancer...... but very early stage ( I hate to think what I would have gone through had it been late stage AH )  It had gone into the jaw bone .I was told it was very easy to cure but a long operation .All the lymph nodes removed plus the margins around were clear ........but just to give an added bonus (I was told ) we advise a small amount of radiation . Also the Drs said that if surgery was ever needed again in that area, a person cannot have radiation in the same area !!They took my gum because of course it sits on top of the jaw bone and I didn`t have any teeth left there. My salivery glands also were taken, so my mouth is bone dry at all times.......terrible feeling I`ll tell you. I cannot help but feel Ian, that your cancer must have spread into the jaw, otherwise why would they have removed it  ? I have about an inch of gum on the right side left so even soft food i have to chew with that little bit. If I have missed anything you want to know or ask about , just let me know. It is a big desision to make. It isn`t very painful though, and I think I was in hospital 10 days., then 6wks in London for the radiation.
