Subject: RE: Side Effects of Carac or Efudex
Date: 11/03/2008
Hey to all ... I have been reading all your messages for 3 days.  Glad to know I am not alone.   I am 49 years old, female, and did spend a lot of time in the sun ... I did use lotion instead of  baby oil like a lot of my friends.  But my doctor wants me to cover my whole face instead of just freezing off individual spots. Picked up "the stuff" today from the pharmacy and will be starting tomorrow TUES.  My 2 questions... how long till you really don't want to go out in the public ( does it just look like a bad sunburn the first day or two or three?)   I do have to work WED & THURS and then I can take some time off.  Will I be alright WED & THURS ? And, do you apply it right to your hair line when you are doing your entire face?  I will look forward to anyone's response and advice.  Thanks in advance

HiIf you are using carac, the redness will begin in about 3-4 days.  By the 2nd week you will look like you have a very bad sunburn. The 4th week is the worse. That's when the scabbing and peeling start.  I am off of carac since the end of aug. And my forehead is still red.  Anyone else hve the redness so long?  I don't see the dermotoligist again until dec.  Should i be worried?  Please helpMary

I'm not an expert but.... i was told once you start the treatment you should not quit.  go from start to finish.   i think your lips don't know what's going on.   I used the carac cream for 28 days on my forehead. the first week there was nothing but as the weeks went by it got worse.  the pain, peeling and burning was unbearable at times.  the cream brings the cancer cells to the surface and then it all peels off.  i now have all new skin on my forehead, cancer free and it feels as soft as a baby's behind.  stick with it, it all works out in the end.

RE: carac cream

i have now stopped the carac cream to my forehead but it's not getting better.  it burns so bad yet i could just cry.  i went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist gave me a cream that other carac patients of hers use.  it's called natural care gel.  it still burns when i apply it but the dead skin is falling off better.  now i can go thru 3 more weeks of this prceedure to my face and under my eyes.  how long does it take for the skin to fall off and you're back to normal????  getting back to the vaseline... people.... you should not use it!!!!  it's too hard to get off and can actually cause an infection. per numerous pharmacists.  if you are still using the carac cream and vaseline the carac cream is not going to work.  just an fyi.

carac cream

HI and thanks for all the info.  i finally have someone i can relate to.  i have been using carac for 25 days now.  my doctor never told me either how ugly and painful this can be..  i hear all of you talking about putting vaseline on it. my doctor told me nothing else should be used on my forehead while using the carac.  why is my doctor saying that when you all seem to be using it.  i called my doctor about it today but of course he's on vacation.  hope he's wearing his sunscreen!!!!  i'm sick of all the stares and the comments that " its only skin cancer"  i could scream!!!!!  i sneezed yesterday and my forehead cracked open and bled a bit.  that really hurt!!!   now i found out i have more on my face so have to start the treatments again.   i feel so ugly.  i glad i found this site to relate to.

thanks

I am also on my 22nd day.  I look like a freak. my forehead is soooo red and scaley with dead skin all over my forehead.  People alway stare and then turn away and there is no more eye contact.  i would just like to say it's skin cancer i'm not diseased. It is very painful to the point where i can hardly keep my eyes open. i use cold compresses at night. I thought i was just being a baby but i;m glad to hear others find it as painful. and you're right........the doctors should tell you just how painful it is.
