I'm also sorry that my last message seemed a bit scatterbrained ... I'm feeling that right now.

Chef: It's pretty incredible (and depressing) just how cancer works. It's unrelated, but my cat was put down today, and my mom and I preparing ourselves for bad news when she gets her next scan have me stressed beyond belief. I'm sorry to hear so many have lost their battles or are just slowly deteriorating. I'll try to stay active with updates. Until next time...

Continuing the trend of bad news, my mom's numbers keep going up, and one of her chemo treatments stopped working a month or two ago, so that's one less that she's on. Right when there's a good day where I even forget for a second that she's sick, there's a bad one that ruins the next several. Sorry to read the posts the past few months. Awful news all around. Eh..

I heard CEA numbers can spike up when recently starting chemo, as a sign that cancer cells are dying.

My mom was diagnosed with colon cancer for the second time in April of 2011... this time, stage IV. Just last week, a CT scan revealed that she has new spots on her liver, colon, and a mass near her pelvic bone. She will be trying new chemo. She's under the impression, since she's been told they won't do surgery "no matter what", that she's almost reached the end. I tell her there are so many options out there, and ...

...they removed all of that? My mom was told they can't remove the three spots on her liver, spot on her colon, and spot near her pelvic bone. Maybe they're trying to shrink it, I don't know, but I hope she's as fortunate as you.

I have a question... if my mom has a spot on her colon, three on her liver, and then a mass near her pelvic bone, is it not possible to try SIR-Spheres or dendritic cell therapy? Does the cancer have to be limited to just one of those areas? She's had cancer for 2 years and 4 or 5 months, but it's never quite hit me as hard as the most recent news did on Thursday. She starts chemo up again this week, and I can only ...

I think it's unrelated. It was originally in her colon, and now it actually started in her appendix. Hearing that they can't do surgery just makes me feel like it's the "final stretch", but there are some encouraging words in this thread... which is kind of a scary thing because it starts to make me think, for a split second, "SHE'LL BE FINE!", when in actuality, she won't be. I don't know. Maybe she'll respond well...

Hello, everybody. Some positive things in this thread. My mom's had cancer for 2.5 years. She had it about a decade ago, but it was early stage, and she was "cured". Now it's back, and more tumors have formed on her liver. They can't do surgery, but I don't know if that's a permanent thing, or just temporary, until they (hopefully) shrink. A lot of times I feel hopeless, but then I hear about some positive stories....

This sounds a decent bit like the situation my mom is in, though she had cancer of the appendix (not quite the same thing). She got surgery, chemo to shrink a spot on her liver, and more surgery. Her cancer numbers are still up despite having no visible tumors in her body, though she's still breathing. She'll be going back on chemo next month and she's understandably not happy about that, but we'll see what happens.
