I agree with the teaching facilities being a good bet, but would add that the doctor's style of care has much to do with the treatment as well.  Does the doctor employ an aggressive or conservative approach to treatment?

The fact that your mother was able to have resection is a big plus. How much tumor was actually removed? The standard treatment is about 30 days of radiation followed by a monthly schedule of temodar (pills)  until the tumor shrinks or grows. The schedule varies slightly but is usually something like 21 days of treatment and 7 off. Depending how your mother responds to the treatment, and the attitude of her doc...

Jason, What a great idea!  Had we but known some of the symptoms earlier.....  My husband complained of headaches off and on for about a year.  He was not a complainer and never had headaches, or any other illness, ailment before.  He had recently retired from a very stressful job, which we attributed some of his symptoms to.  He was extremely active but was now feeling tired in the evenings...

contact Hospice or a Palliative Care dept at the hospital. Get help and TAKE CAARE OF YOURSELF.  You are no help to your mom if you are not in top shape.

it's normal to have some fatigue, but it may be coming from other issues or meds, as well.  Have you investigated the meds he's taking for that side effect? Is he taking anti-depressants? Even if weak, encourage your dad to move about and walk a little.  I think activity (any kind) is extremely important to ones' health during this time; both physical and mental. And especially for older folks.

Thanks Paul.  things have progressed rapidly to the point he needs 24-7 supervision, which pretty much solved the issue!

My husband had GBM dx 2/2011.  Tumor in right temporal lobe can't be removed, he has had radiation, TMZ and a clinical trial drug that have had little effect and is now on Avastin + carboplatin.  Overall, his side effects have been mininal.  However, the cognitive impairments are rapidly increasing and i'm lost as to what to do and how.  He is physically in great shape and tries to remain as ...

Randy is very hoarse as well.

how would you know that the carbo wasn't working? I'm confused.  I was under the impression avastin was the end of the line.

Husband was diagnosed in Feb 2011 with GBM after seizure in Jan. Biopsy led to clot which revealed tumor is most likely inoperable, although a small portion was removed with the clot. Started TMZ/Chemo w/ clinical trial drug Zactima on March 1st.
First MRI on May 12th, showed a nice reduction in the tumor - phew. Now he is on maintenance for the rest of the year. He seems to be getting progressively worse with headaches, fatigue and mental deficits. Waiting on the results of today's MRI.
MRI showed tumor growth in 2 areas. What a kick in the stomach! So he will be starting Avastin and Carboplatin next week.
