Nothing "positive" for me to report about 5FU (Xeloda)! I got about 11 days into my first round and had to stop because of Hands and Feet. Started it up again after a week and 9 days later wound up in the hospital for 2 weeks where I almost died! Got tested for DPD Deficiency and found no deficiency in DPD BUT I had an MTHFR Polymorphism which can also increase the toxicity of 5FU. May also increase the efficacy of 5FU but supposedly no one knows for sure. Doc wants me to re-start a low-dose, once a week for 90min. infusion of 5FU and work our way up.
Frankly, I'm inclined to just stop the chemo all together and I'm pretty sure that's what I'm going to do. After what I've been through and what I've read about the side effects and long term side effects I'm inclined to take my chances that the surgeon got it all and the really rough first couple of rounds got whatever else may have been floating around in me. I figure, if I get cancer again, it was going to happen anyway. I'm going to live as much of my life as I can feeling good!!!
