After 8 long months of misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis on Dec 17th, 2012 my 56 yr old mother was finally diagnosed with stomach cancer 10 days later we found out it had mets to her peritoneal cavity during a laproscopic procedure. She was supposed to remove her stomach, but that was no longer an option once the doctors found out it had spread to the Peritoneal Cavity. We were told palliative chemo is the only option in her case. Since her diagnosis we've sought and had a second opinion in which we sent over all pathology report and scans to 2nd hospital and were told they were in complete agreement with the first hospital's diagnosis and treatment of care. In the meantime I have set up an appointment to meet with a surgeon who specializes in the Hipec procedure next wednesday hoping my mom will be a good candidate for this procedure and it will give us some more time with her. My mother's starting weight 8 months ago was 196 lbs and as it stands is at 115lbs as of Jan 17th, which was also her first Folfox chemo treatment. We sat in the hospital for 4 hours receiving oxiplatin, leuvocorin, and 5fu followed by wearing the pump for the next 46 hours. First two days their weren't really any side effects 3 & 4th day were full of fatigue 5th day and 6th day went pretty smooth and today was a bad day for nausea, stomach pains and more pain medications then usual. Since she started chemo we have incorporated benecalorie into her diet to get her to maintain her weight but it seems nothing is really that appealing to her except rice pudding, cinnabon oatmeal, italian ice unflavored and baked fish. I'm looking for recipes and anything else anyone can suggest that will go down easy. Thin liquids like water and juice don't seem to stay down very long so today we started juicing and that seems to at least stay down a little longer. We also hired a massage therapist to come over every other week for an hour to hopefully help with any possible neuropathy and circulation issues she may have in the future. I'm at a loss don't really know what else I can do since she came home from the hospital I've slept in a chair in her room afraid this might be her last night and feeling that she needs me too because she's afraid. At our second opinion I asked the doctor not to give my mom a timeframe so she wouldn't get more upset since she's been in such a fragile state, but i did ask her to tell me. Her answer was 3-6 months and now i feel like i can't do enough fast enough all i find myself doing is staying up half the night reading forums looking for some helpful advice and hope.
