Senator asks FDA to Reveal Sunscreen Chemical Information

by: cancercompass

Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) formally asked the United States Food and Drug Administration on Sunday to release data regarding the sunscreen chemical retinyl palmitate and its potential link to cancer development.

"With the recent reports suggesting a possible link between skin cancer and a common chemical found in sunscreens, the FDA must act now to protect consumers," Schumer wrote in a statement.

Sunscreen has been under the microscope recently with last month's release of the 2010 Sunscreen Guide and Memorial Weekend's Don’t Fry Day™.

According to The Washington Post, Schumer claims one study found that tumors developed up to 21 percent faster in lab animals tested with retinyl palmitate-laced cream than those treated with a cream that did not contain the chemical.
