Happy Holidays!

Hello everyone, and happy holidays! My name is Zipporah Porton, and I am excited to join the CancerCompass team as a new blogger.

A little bit about me? I have been a writer for my entire life, and I feel lucky to be able to call this my profession. Like many, cancer has touched my immediate family in a number of ways, and as this blog continues I look forward to sharing some of the specifics of my encounters. I am blessed to report that those who are close to me are all currently survivors who are still going strong. Of course, I do have friends that were not quite as lucky. In this day and age, it is nearly impossible to say that you've never known anyone with some form of cancer - it is simply too prevelant. Therefore, it is a wonderful thing to have a place like CancerCompass for survivors, caregivers, researchers and more to unite and discuss their thoughts and feelings.

With the holidays upon us, now is a great time to step back and appreciate all that we have. However, for survivors, it is also necessary to concentrate on ways to enjoy the holidays while keeping health in mind. HealthyDay.com has just posted a great article highlighting steps that cancer survivors can take in order to stay healthy during what can often be a stressful time. The main key is to relax, and focus on your own personal needs during this time. Another great peice of advice is to plan ahead as much as possible. If you're prepared to enjoy the holidays, it will make it that much easier to do so once they arrive.

For caregivers and those who are focused on supporting others with cancer, why not spread a little cheer this winter with a visit to a local hospital? Being hospitlized during the holidays can be extremely difficult, and visits from loved ones or even strangers can do wonders to boost a patient's mood.

Once again, have a safe and happy holiday season, and I look forward to sharing more thoughts and insight through this blog platform in the New Year!
