PLEASE GIVE ME HOPE! ANY LONG TERM SURVIVORS?

My husband has extensive small cell lung cancer he was diagnosed in Dec. 06.  He is currently receiving chemo but due to our financial circumstances it took a while for him to get the care he needs.  We are currently receiving treatment through the county hospital (they do have wonderful doctors) but because of the amount of patients you do not receive the attention you might receive from a facility that just treats cancer.  We have recently found that it has spread to his spine but the doctor doesn't seem concerned, which concerns me! Everything I have read about this AWFUL disease is not encouraging and I try to fit in as many questions as I can with the little time we get to actually see the doctor but I always leave with doubt.  I am watching my husband (my life) dwindle away and I can't do anything but encourage him and be the strong one.  We have two small children (4 and 8) and it is extremely hard to balance everything.  I am the financial support for us now because he is not able to work anymore.  We do have WONDERFUL FAMILY AND FRIENDS  but at night when they are not there and I search for the hope I need I have not been able to find ANY survival stories.  Every story is 12 to 24 months at the best.  Well that means 5 months are already gone.  I don't know what to do, I am so scared and need to talk to someone that has some GOOD news.  Does anyone survive past 2 years?  My husband and kids are my world and I can't deal with the thought of losing him.  My boys are so upset, I try not to let them know what is going on as much as I can but they see how much pain he is in.  They see that he can't do things he used to.  Right now he has fluid around the lung (about 3 liters)  they are going to put a permanent drain so he doesn't have to keep going to the hospital for that.  With small children battling colds, the flu and any other germ is extremely hard.  He also just got out of the hospital for pnuemonia.  It is one this after another.  One second he feels ok and the next he is in extreme pain.  I know nobody can tell me that he will live past 2 years but I would just like to know that there is a chance (more than just 2%).  Also I am so furious with him because he has not quit smoking!!!! He has tried but nothing has helped.  He has taken pills he has tried talking with people (he has been smoking 37 years, he started when he was 13yrs old and he will be 50 in June).

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME HOPE, NOT THE USUAL STATISTICS I NEED REAL STORIES FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE SURVIVED OR WHO HAVE KNOWN ANYBODY WHO HAS SURVIVED SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER (EXTENSIVE STAGE).  I AM OPEN TO ANY ADVICE PLEASE!!!!

If the current treatment is not working then second line chemotherapy can be tried for extensive stage small cell lung cancer. The medication is called Topotecan and is a standard of care for treatment for small cell lung cancer  once the cancer progresses after the initial chemotherapy.Same patients surprise doctors and live much longer then the "statistical" patient. All cancer doctors have such an examples in their practices.Have hope and speak to you husband doctor about his cancer treatment options.

Hello Luckyluch10 ........I hear the pain and the fear in your message. Please send me a private message. I have a good friend who was told in early December 2006 that he would not live to see Christmas. His lungs were so full of cancer he could hardly draw a breath. His prostate cancer had spread throughout his body including his bones. His body was FULL of it and yet after just 10 to 12 weeks of alternative treatment (without any side effects) the cancer is gone. Please BELIEVE THIS. Your traditional doctors will poo poo this message and discourage you from "stepping outside the box" but take a look at their track record and unfortunately I don't think you will see many positive outcomes. I have a lot of information to show you that natural treatments do and are working and are not toxic to the immune system. Shemay

Hello

I know a man who has survived five years and his latest ct was negative...including his chest xray.  He took Gleevic and Irissa...no radiation.   He seems to have recovered from it!

Hi could you give me more info on Gleevic and Irissa? I am looking for hope too. My father has stage 4 SCLC. He will start chemo again in a few weeks. This will be what the doctor told me was the "third line of defense". The doc, does not seem too optomistic. I tell the doc, as long as my dad is willing to fight, then there is hope. He looks good though. A little tierd. Not too hungry, but still cutting grass, watching my daughter, washing his truck, going on vacation, no pain at all. He wants to keep fighting. I am right behind him! I am thankful he wants to keep fighting. He was diagnosed in July '06.

To the OP: There is always hope. Many prayers to you and your family!!

Nancy,

Thanks! I will keep watching to see if more info is posted. I would love to read his story!! In the mean time I am going to call my dad's doctor and ask about these treatments. My father will be starting the third line of defense. He wants to keep on fighting. I think he looks pretty good.

Thanks!
Janine

Hello my friend.

My husband too, has SCLC.  This site:  http://lchelp.org/ has helped me so much with survivor stories and more.  Go to the message boards and read in the different categories as well as SCLC.  God bless you and your husband.

Happy Mother's Day.

Laurie

I just asked my Dad's doctor about Irissa and he said it is no longer available to cancer patients.
