Social Security Disability - GBM qualification?

Hi there everyone!  I'm interested in learning if anyone has had any success in getting qualified for SSD benefits?  Any tips for making this seamless?  I've started the process online and need to send in my paperwork so they can review.  From what I've read, they DO NOT rely on doctor's orders but rather, ability to do the same or similar previous job.  I'm the last person to take/accept a handout but for SS, I look at it as a "bank account" that I've been paying into for the past 30 some odd years...I'd like to get some sort of financial relief since there is no way I see myself doing the same work I've been doing for that time.  Tips?  Suggestions?

Great!  I'll be sending in the paperwork today.  Hopefully I'll hear back by the end of summer :)

I am a GBM survivor and when I applied for SSDI it was approved in two weeks.  I did the online application and then took my medical records into the local office a few days later.  They made copies of my medical records and with the GBM diagnosis my application was fast-tracked.

There is a five month delay before the first payment.

I appreciate your experience and will hope to be "fast tracked" as well.  Five months!  I'm sure there is/was a reason for this tardiness.  Thanks again :)

The five months is the standard waiting period.  I was told it would be five months before my first payment.  In fact I recall they told me the date my first payment would be paid when I was approved.

I recently did this successfully.  I went in person to the SS office.  Took me a couple of trips there, forms, follow up with Dr and murses, etc.  I believe that you are paid for the 5 month waiting period. But best to check with them directly.  Seems like there is some conflicting info out there so I decided to just go in.  It was actually very easy compared to dealing with the disease.

Does one need to be actively employed at the time of diagnosis? Jean hasn't worked for about 16 months, and took her SS early at age 62.  Thanks!  Beth
