I have my first treatment today for stage IVa tonsil cancer..  radiation first..then chemo.. getting nervous..I know the road ahead is going to be rough...trying to keep it together for my wife and kids... life has been on hold since the terrible word cancer came into our lives. Was 6/14/17..  since then...sx and doctor visits all leading up to today... terrible thing is the cancer has become very aggressive and tumor has grown in 2 weeks.. my RO could not believe it.. my ENT was in shock .. but gonna get this started.  I chose hope.

Ok ...first day in the books....  7 1/2 more weeks of rad/chemo...  but first is done

Well done.  And you are getting lots of good support and advice here already.

Your attitude and clearheadedness in the face of what you know to be a serious diagnosis and a nasty treatment are commendable.  As the days add up, it may help to find someone you can confide in, if not your family then maybe a close friend or clergy person.  You are trying to stay strong for everyone else, but it's you who will living this.

So, if nothing else, come here to ask, wonder, rant, whatever.  No matter what, you are quite likely to find someone(s) who understands exactly what you are going through, and that can be a great comfort.  Nobody gets it like someone who's been there.

I am well over six years out from stage III throat cancer, no primary found.  Did the surgery and radiation, but not chemo.  It was bad, but it gets better, and I am now able to do whatever I like.

All the best,

Susan

Chemo hit me like a hammer.. was not expecting it so soon but meds help...radiation is 2 down now and that mask is no joke.. i now know what to expect from chemo... gonna try to stay on top of it...

Fear is your enemy..........Dont.

Positive attitude, smile, joke and cut-up.  Makes everything go smoother for you and the people around you.

When one of your friends asks "is there anything I can do for you?"........say YES  Take all my chemo treatments for me.

You will be fine

Good luck and stay strong!

SO many have gone through this here, myself included (I was also Stage 4).

Radiation will get worse as it progresses.  I needed the feeding tube.  I had Cisplatin and had a hard time with it.

The treatment is rough and you know that.  The good news is - you're going to be alright!!!!!  NOT all cancer patients can say this.  The other good news is that your / our treatment is very well defined and we know the end; X # radiation (mine was 36) and x # chemo (mine was 3).  I used this to countdown to the end!  33% done....50% done....75% done...etc.

I wish you lots of luck, good health and lean on us - this board was my savior especially towards the end when I felt horrible, had phlegm, the feeding tube and all that comes with it!

My husband just finished radiation and chemo.   My best advice during treatment is to stay ahead of the nausea.  Ask for and take whatever they will give.  We usually started the day before chemo to make sure they were In his system.   He also had Emend and another anti nausea in his IV during chemo as well.  Keep at the doctors and don't down play how you are feeling.  My husband would feel awful and then not communicate how bad he felt.  So that left me to be the bossy wife...and I asked for everything and complained about everything that bothered him. The doctors were probably happy when he was done however we've been done for a week and I've called every day!  That mask is crazy!  Good luck and make sure to advocate for yourself.

i had BOT 4a seven years ago. what was diagnosedas the size of a bb was the size of a grape by the time I received treatment. My treatment was agressive and I was also agressive with my care> become an active part of your medical team. If you have any strange senses during the chemo especially let the team know. There is treatment for most reactions of chemo. I was lucky that I never got sick but anemia did kick my ass. Frightful as the rapid growth was prior to treatment th tumor was unpalpable with 3weeks. If been cancer free for 6 1/2 years now and I hope the same will be with you. 70 rads and 10 dys of chemo was an experience I can't wish for anyone but the treatment works.

That is what I am worried I may have. I am glad you are still here. I have white bumps on the right side of my tongue towards the very back and have an appointment with ENT in 4 days. May I ask who do performed the biopsy? Was it an ENT?

Yes, I will always be here. My original diagnosis was by my local doctor from a CT scan. It was later biopsied by my ENT.

I was fortunate to have a dream medical team from 3 separate hospitals.

As I may have mentioned. I had BOT stage 4a 7 years ago. The greatest help I had along with a great medical team was the support from this blog. Sinse then I ave been active on the blog to help others and have even coached a fewthru the treatment process. Just ask any question no matter how foolish you think it may be. You will always get an answer. The most comforting about this blog is that it helps greatly allieve you fears of the process. You will recover, keep the humor up and count the days.

Catlover,

White bumps don't sound like cancer, but everyone is different of course.

My regular doctor ordered the original CT and had it sent to an ENT, who did the biopsy.  And then he did the surgery (modified radical neck dissection) I needed later.

I hope your upcoming appointment yields a different diagnosis, which puts your mind at ease.

All the best,

Susan
