HPV questions

About 25 years ago I had ovarian cancer, it is assumed now it was HPV positive. My partner got tonsil cancer HPV + 4 years ago and was successfully treated with radiation and chemo. 3 years ago I got vulvar cancer HPV + and was successfully treated with skinning of the vulva tissue. Now my partner has recently been diagnosed with base of the tongue cancer - HPV NEGATIVE!! now I have a sore throat and will see the doctor this week as I’m afraid I have some sort of throat cancer. My questions are; Has anyone had hpv positive come back as hpv negative? Has anyone had been diagnosed plus your partner with HPV positive cancer of any kind? As an aside we have not had sex since a year before his tonsil cancer.

The length of time between exposure to HPV and its causing cancer is thought to be quite long at times.  It can stay for years and years, so the sex doesn't have to be recent.

My cancer--head and neck squamous cell carcinoma--was in one lymph node only, and no primary was ever found.  I was diagnosed 7 years ago next month, and pathology of the tumor came back HPV-.  But my ENT now feels quite sure, considering how I responded to treatment (surgery to remove the lymph node and 5 weeks of radiation, no chemo) that I must surely have been HPV+ instead, and says that early testing was not always correct.  So I am guessing that there could be false negatives even now.

If he is a smoker that could account for the HPV status of his tumor.

I have never heard of ovarian cancer being related to HPV, and was not able to find anything on the net about it.  What makes you think yours was?

I sincerely doubt that your sore throat is related to cancer at all.  All the best.

Susan
