Carbon ion radiotherapy is like proton radiotherapy radiation with particles.

Particle radiation is most effective where the beam is stopped. At this point, the Bragg peak, the tumour tissue absorbs the highest single dose.

After that there is a rapid dosage drop to almost cero.This facilitates an extremely accurate tumour irradiation and maximum protection of the healthy surrounding tissue.

Compared to protons, carbon ions are on average three times more biologically effective. This means the likelihood of irreperable cell demage can be multiplied with carbon ions as compared with protons and photons using the same irradiation dose.

Furthermore, carbon ion also effect metabolically less active cells, which practically exist in every tumour, as well as tumours with weak blood circulation and low in oxygen and slowly growing tumours like adenoid cystic carcinoma.
