Mybdearest family member was just diagnosed with Stage 4a hpv related squamous cancer of the tonsil with metastasis to two lymph nodes on the same side as the tumor. Pet scan for below the neck involvement was negative. Radiation and chemotherapy treatments will start soon. He is young and a father. My heart is broken, and I am praying for a miracle so that he is around to see even his toddler grow up. Are there long term 10+ years survivors out there for Stage 4 hpv related squamous cancer of head and neck? I am searching for hope and inspiration. What advice do you have to get through this and to remain cancer free? Also, any advice on the toxic side effects of the treatments and how to help these? I am very new to this site and to having a loved one being diagnosed with this cancer.

Praying,

My tumor was stage III, and I am 7 years out and considered cured.  I have met a number of others here and on another site who have survived stage IV as well.  Most of these cases are diagnosed in the later stages, after they have spread to the lymph nodes but before any further metastasis, as is the case with your family member.  When this cancer is found to be related to HPV, it has a much better prognosis than if it is tobacco related.

I hope you can take heart from learning this, and I'm sure others who have had a similar diagnosis will post soon as well.

Wishing you and him all the best,

Susan

I’m sorry to hear about your family member. My husband had stage IV squamous cell cancer of the tonsil and lymph nodes. He was diagnosed in February 2008. He had chemo and radiation. He went through a rough time but I’m thankful to say he is 10 years out this year and doing great! His cousin also had the exact cancer the year before him and is doing great too! Still a couple of side effects but it’s manageable. Keep the faith. My husband always had a positive attitude even through the hard times. I think that helps.
