SC joint and shoulder issues

I finished my rad treatment in Feb. 2016.  My tumor was on my right tonsil, so my right side received the brunt of my radiation.  I had PT to help my shoulder get stronger, as I could barely lift it over my head after treatment.   I began working out and got back to relative normalcy. I got busy and wasnt able to workout for several months and all the sudden I started to have pain in my SC joint (where the clavicle meets the sternum) and my shoulder pain has returned.  It has been 3 weeks and I feel like its not getting better.  Anyone have similar issues after treatment?  I dont feel any lumps or concerning swelling in the area, but it won't improve.

It gets exhausting, every little thing that comes up brings you right back to where you were when you had cancer.  I am a very happy and optomistic person, but its gets taxing.  Thank you everyone, hope everyone is getting by..

I finished my radiation mid September of ‘15. BOT HPV with met to the right lymph node in my neck. It’s been a long painful struggle, but I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Had my feeding tube taken out a couple weeks ago, but can only eat very small bites of real food yet. I’ have pain at the base of my skull, my right shoulder and arm. i have not done much therapy for this. I try stretching in the morning and turning my head to the right and left and holding that for a minute each time. I am slowly losing use of the arm and cannot raise it much at all now. I’ve read on here of someone losing complete use of their radiated sides arm. I go next week for a nerve conduction test my doctor ordered, but I doubt there is much that can be done. I try to continue using it as much as I can though. I take gabapentin for the shoulder and neck pain which helps some. As my mother used to say, I just keep on keepin on. Good luck and God Bless. Donna

Cardoza,

Side effects can be pretty discouraging.

Have you resumed your exercise program and still had no improvement?  Have you recreated the program that helped before?  Maybe seeing a different PT might help.  They all have slightly different ideas about how to help.

All the best,

Susan

I too have that same pain. I had BOT right side. Radiation only to treat but have clavicle pain on my left side. Finished treatment OCT 28 2016.  It has gotten better but still comes and goes and was once pretty bad along with tightness and stiffness in sternum/chest and upper back. Still flares up though

I have asked a couple of times on this board but you are the first to zero in on a the same problem i have that seems a litlle different than what you hear normally

i have gotten back to pushups and more exercise and that seems to have helped but also as i said time may be helping too.  Who knows but you are not alone

Thank you for the replies.  Yeah, mine seems to improve for a day or 2 then comes back.  I have the same issue in my shoulder on my radiation side.  Good luck.  Tony

Hi Cardoza, I’m now about 8 months from treatment and I have some ongoing shoulder and neck restriction. It isn’t having a major impact on my life but it is noticeable when I’m driving etc. I’m about to resume yoga and start tai chi so hopefully those will assist. N
