drugs to help with anxiety???

My Mom will be starting radiation therapy for throat cancer next week.  She will be required to wear a mask over her face and be very still.  She is claustrophobic, and I was wondering if there is a drug someone could recomend to help with this.  Are there any over the counter ones, or does she need a prescription?

Ativan.  Prescription required.  You and her should share her fears and anxiety with her Cancer team.  They should have no problem prescribing.

Best of luck.

I just wanted to tell you that not everyone needs drugs.  I am also claustrophobic, but I told myself that I'd do the best I could.  I discovered that the radiation experience was not as bad as I'd thought it would be.  The mask held me in place, but I just imagined that I didn't want to move.  Otherwise I was fine, as I was not confined in a tiny space at all.

I think that the thing some people object to is being restrained, not being in a small place.  It's a bit different from claustrophobia in that way, and I was able to get through it just fine, no meds.  So I'm hoping that maybe my experience will be a bit comforting for her.

That said, I did develop some anxiety later in my treatment and found Xanax to work well.

All the best,

Susan

Hi Candice, I used Atvian for my first week or so but then found I was able to go without it. Being “under the mask” is harder some days than it is others but it might help your mum to keep in mind that those 5 - 10 minutes each day pass quickly. I also found that concentrating on an object within my vision helped to distract me. My radiology team also played music and that proved another good distraction. Sorry to hear that your Mum has to battle this disease. I hope she recovers quickly and returns to health. N
