Wife has Stage IV Colon Cancer Metasiszed in Liver now with back pain

My 35 year old wife was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer with it Metasized in her liver on 1/2/19. The tumor on her liver is 9cm long. The tumor in her colon is 2cm. Over the last week she has had some pretty bad lower back pain. Dr. is managing this pain with hyrdacodon and Tylenol. She has a PET scan today, final follow up with Dr Tuesday then a consult in Pittsburgh for treatment options.

I was wondering if the back pain means that it is possible that it has spread to her bones or kidneys or just a pain from the liver.

at 35 we never thought we would be dealing with this. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

I  am very sorry to hear about your wife, my dad passed away on 11/27/18 of bile duct cancer 3 months after his diagnosis. I did learned so much about this affault disease, and my first advice will be to cut all sugar!!! Not the natural ones found on fruits but the added once. NO Sugar, its the cancer food!!!! It's a hard road ahead but I hope she gets better. I will pray for her. Tell her to also eat fruits in the morning on an empty stomach this helps a lot with digestion and less pain from her liver. My dad did had a lot of pain too in his back but it was from the liver shouting the pain everywhere! Gluck!!

I am living in the UK and was diagnosed in March 2015 very similar to your wife. My problem was the liver mets were around the vena cava in the liver so inoperable I was told palliative care only.

I saw a liver consultant in another hospital who said if you can reduce the tumour around the vena cava  and give him some operating space he would do so. I had 6 cycles of brutal chemotherapy and the tumour reduced enough to operate.

The operation took place in the October 2015 and was successful, it was followed in the February 2016 with the bowel operation in which they removed my large bowel taking the primary tumour with it and leaving me with a permanent ileostomy

This was followed up with another 8 cycles of chemo and regular scans

Twice tumours have returned on the liver but been ablated, a simple overnight hospital stay and operation procedure.

Almost 4 years from my first diagnosis I have 5 clear scans since the last recurrence.

I am not daft enough to think the cancer will not return but what I am giving you is a case study and hope. Have faith and be positive. Like me people immediately think this is the end but it does not have to be, a positive state of mind will certainly help.

Even though mine was grade 4 and in at least a third of the lymph glands they removed the chemo and operations have kept it at bay thus far. So be proactive and ask the questions of all the options

My diet has certainly beome more healthy too, and I have added supplements like turmeric/piperine(latter to help absorption) on a daily basis, not sure if I can prove it helps but it helps me to think it does.

I wish your wife a successful outcome but their will be some tough times along the way, that I am sure yourself, family and friends and not least health professional will help you through

Sending good wishes

Ron

Thank you so much Ronmor! We are currently seeking treatment at UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA one of the top hospitals in the country, also we have one of the top oncologist as well. My wife gets her port in place tomorrow (Friday) and then starts her first treatment on Tuesday. They want to shrink the tumors (colon tumor and liver tumor) before opting for any surgery. She will be getting chemo every other Tuesday for 6 months. Hoping it responds well to the Chemo and we have a fighting chance. Her attitude has been amazing and I pull off of her strength sometimes. She is amazing and know she can kick this cancers ass. Thank you for your words and the hope that you give us!

I was diagnosed with mets to liver 11/2014. Her back pain could definitely be from her liver. Shoulder pain is also known to be referred from liver. I would reconsider taking any Tylenol because it is very hard on the liver. It can accumulate and not be processed with a compromised liver. Best wishes.

Hi Raymond,  I was diagnosed in Jan 2015 with stage 4 colon cancer with mets to the para spinal lymph nodes.  Mine was found because I had pain in my back.  The original diagnosis was stage 3 because only 1 lymph node was involved.  Aftwter 6 rounds of chemo the PET scan showed all was clear.  I finished the original 12 rounds of chemo  and was all clear.  My oncologist is very aggressive about treating this disease and I am receiving maintenance chemo until whenever I have decided enough is enough.  I am 3 years into remission and feeling and looking good.  The maintenance chemo is very tolerable just a nuisance.  One half day every every other week and then on my merry way.  Stay positive.  The original 12 rounds can be rough.  Everyone tolerates chemo differently.  Good luck, prayers and hugs your way.  I am from the pittsburgh area but live in the Philly area now.  I know UPM

C very well.  I worked at Children's Hospital for a couple of years way back in the late 60's.
