Questions about PC?

Hi all,

First time posting here. I was recluctant to post here, but I didnt know where else to turn as I havent received much help from my Dr's on this. I have some questions that maybe some of you going through this could possibly help me out with.

I am 30 years old and have considered myself resonably healthy, going to the gym often (3-4 days a week min) and have been a runner all of my life. However, I would say that I do drink socially on the high end (mostly when watching sports); probably more than I should, but have been looking to cut back. I do have a history of cancer in my mother side of the family (Mom- Endometrial Cancer, Aunt- Colon, Aunt- Breast). Recently I have been starting to have symptoms similar to PC, which have my worried. It all started earlier this year. I when noticed I started to notice that sometimes my stools were not fully formed, almost like steatorrhea, except unlike the discription they were not pale like some people say and they could still flush easily. Best discription would be a cow pie mush at times. I then noticed that since the beginning of the year, I was about 210lbs and lost about 20 lbs to date. I was trying to lose weight anyway and I started playing in a basketball league in addition to my running routine at the gym, so I attributed the weight loss to that. However, I didnt noticed anything out of the ordinary like pain. In July I started getting frequent headaches, had a CT scan done on my head and nothing showed up. Blood work was normal at the time except my bilirubin was maybe a point on the high end per the lab(1.2g.ml ). My weight was about 196 at the time. The headaches continued which had me worried and in September started getting back pain in my spine when driving that kind of came and went. I attributed that to a project that I was working on that required alot of driving and being in and out of a car, which I wasnt used to doing. In Late November/early December I started getting upper quadrant abdonimal pain and pain in my left flank went to my doctor for a follow up. I was about 193lbs at the time and all of my blood work was normal. My liver enzymes were not high and my bilirubin was in the normal range (1.0 g.ml ). However towards late December, the back pain near my spine especially when I drove a car, sat in an office chair or laid in bed become more frequent. I also noticed that I was bloated and felt full easily. Alcohol seemed to increase symptoms. Going to the gym has helped with the spine pain, but I feel as if I have a small marble on my spine at times. My stools seemed to normal out, but I started taking a ton of vitamins and tumeric so I think that helped. My weight is around 190lbs now. I looked at my symptoms online and they match closest to PC or Pancreatitis. The only thing I havent had is becoming jaundice or itchy skin. My Liver Enzymes and Glouclose levels are normal and not close to the high limits so that gives me some comfort. However, some articles say it could be PC, but I dont know for sure.

I am scheduled to get an ultrasound next week and I admit that I am freaking out about it. As I am only 30 and I know the chances are slim, but anything can happen.

My Questions are:

Did anyone have steatorreah as the initial presenting symptom of PC before pain?

In regards to backpain, the pain that I have doesnt really readiate too much to the sides, but it is mostly on the spine  or slightly to the left of it near where my pancreas would be and feels as if the nerves in my spine were being pulled. Is that similar to what others have expierienced?  Could people have spine pain with pancreatitis only?

Did anyone feel pain at the lower parts of there abdomen in addition to the upper parts as well like a gwaning feeling close to the skin that moves around or was it pretty much localized to upper adominal regions?

I am sorry for the questions, but I didnt know where else to turn. I am super nervous about my ultrasound, but my hope that this is pancreatitis or something less serious. I am getting married at the end of this year and it would be my luck for something like this to happen. Any help or answer to my questions would be most appreciated. Thank you so much

God bless you all.

Hi eazy,

I'm so sad that a 30, you have to fear pancreatic cancer. I truly hope that it's just a wake up call for you to consider some minor  lifestyle changes for your future health and not this worst case scenario! But having said that I have been a very light drinker my whole life, never smoked, and still got cancer. So don't beat yourself up over that.

My pancreatic cancer started with mid gut pain that radiated to the back. It felt like kidney pain, and I suspected an infection at first.  The tumor was ( and still is) in the body/tail of my pancreas,  so jaunice did not present itself and never has.

Looking way back, before the actual pain started, there were weird emotional swings like depression, anxiety  and panic attacks ( never had those before), and elevated blood glucose. I had a strange strong pulse pulse right beside my navel on the left side,  which my doctor could not really explain. Sometimes I had a feeling of fullness like I needed to go to the bathroom. I got satiated quickly after eating small meals, and lost weight. But as far as the actual pain, it was mostly from the navel up.

It's good you are getting checked out. Waiting until the symptoms are impossible to tolerate is too long, so you have done the right thing. I'm hoping for a good scan. Good luck.

Why haven't you had an MRI?  I went through reporting symptoms to doctors and they simply wanted to treat me with more and more meds, they said my pain was from gurd, etc.  I pushed and then as much as i could demanded an MRI (my CT scan didn't show the tumor on my pancreas).  The MRI showed the tumor and spots on liver.  Now, you are very young and a long shot you have PC but do get an MRI and end your doubts and get peace of mind by knowing your situation.

To be honest, I dont know. It seems like the doctors are looking to do the cheapest available test first, which I have no problem doing if is accurate enough to rule out something serious. However, I would rather do the most expensive test and rule everything out so I can get on with life. I assume an ultrasound is the cheapest method, thats why it was chosen. I will take your advice and push for an MRI.

I too have been having symptoms of pc. Getting pains in my back. I have been for and ultrasound, 2 cat scans and an mri in last month. All came back clear other than fatty enlarged liver and enlarged spleen. Even got a 2nd opinion on my mri. I was told that too have back pains and other symptoms im having the pc would have showed on scans esp the mri. Any idea what my next step should be?
