Confused

I am currently waiting for an FNA after an ultrasound showed a "highly suspicious" nodule. Small, under 1 cm but all the markers of cancer. Hypoechoic, calcifications, irregular margins, increased vascularity, possible extension :( Met with a surgeon and she said 80% it is cancer.
My question is why do we all read that most nodules are not cancer, yet in the groups and forums it seems most end up being cancer, first it isn't then it is etc.
Maybe it is just because the people in these groups are all in the 5% that are cancerous? Anyway, I am 61 y/o so that makes it riskier I hear, I am scared and the waiting sucks as you all know. 3 weeks till the FNA.

Over the past 10 years, I've read plenty of accounts where nodules ended up being begnign after FNA or thyroidectomy.

3 weeks out for an FNA is disgraceful, the medical community should be ashamed.

Good luck!

Thank you for the encouragement. I sure hope to get lucky with this. I live rurally but still?! I am on a cancel list. So often we are told we have anxiety and need to reduce stress. Of course, we do because navigating the medical system and waiting so long for everything is stressful.
I hope you are well!

There is indeed a bias where cancer groups are sought for by those with worse diags. Take me as an example: I have been dealing with ThyCa since 2012, but only got to this forum after being diagnosed with Stage IV some years later.

As for percentages and risks, they apply to populations; for you, what matters is your case. So a focus on determining, to the best of medical technology, what your case is or isn't will allow you to deal better with your situation.

In my case, it was a shock moving from a scenario where most people recover to one where most people die. But my tumor hasn't changed a bit, it was just a change in perception.

Thanks for the advice and practical perspective! You are correct. I am truly sorry that things have changed for the worse in your illness. I do hope things improve.
