Possible tonsil or sinus cancer

Good morning, Aside from the attempt at pleasantries, it is not really a good day. I found a lump on my tonsil last night, after experiencing on and off again pain for the past six months in my right sinus, right side of my neck. I was treated for sinus infection late Sept 2018, which had progressed into my lungs. I had crackling and the doctor prescribed antibiotics. The meds seemed to work well, but the sinus spasms and pain started again in January with tingling down my jaw line to the base of my neck. It has now progressed around to the base of my skull, and shoulders. I tried taking more antibiotics, and they didn't help much. Today, I go in for assessment. I am 56 and relatively healthy, so quite concerned I have tonsil or sinus cancer. Aside from this news, I have a trip with my lovely wife planned for next week. I am hoping we can continue abroad but am fearful. Once again...

Just,

I hope that the appointment today will help you realize that you can go on that trip, as long as it's not a really long one anyway.  Either the doctor can reassure that you are basically OK, or you can get a referral to an ENT to check further.  As long as the trip is not too long, you should be fine to go, whether or not you may have cancer.

One thing you have going for you is that antibiotics have worked, at least somewhat, indicating that it could be a bug of some sort.

Take care and send us a "postcard" of the results of your appointment.  Best of luck to you.

Susan

I totally agree with David! I was diagnosed in 2007 with tonsil cancer and saw a total of 5 GPS - the last one even mentioned my having one tonsil much bigger than the other but didn’t sound concerned - only curious. I started having very mild chest pains and went to see a cardiologist. She ordered a stress test because of my family history of heart disease but it was normal. I ‘mentioned’ what the GP in Urgent Care had said so she referred me to an ENT (ear, nose, and ‘throat’ specialist). I saw the ENT on Mon, my ENT on Wed, and in surgery the following Mon - diagnosed with tonsil cancer before leaving the operating room. Tonsil cancer rarely has any symptoms other than one hugely enlarged tonsil while the other is normal in size and extreme fatigue but when anyone has a problem in one area, it is best to go to a doctor that specializes in that area.
