Severe Pain Jaw Post Radiation Treatments

My husband’s last treatment was September 4th of 2018. He had 35 radiation and 5 chemo treatments for cancer in his neck and tonsil. Afterwards was very rough, but he made it, and was feeling better. In January he started having pain in his jaw area. It gets pretty severe at times . They have done CT scans and an MRI, and other than the normal issues of arthritis in his neck nothing has shown up. They have him on pain meds and Gabapentin. I read on here where someone was using the TENS for neck pain, so we started doing that on his jaw, it helps but the pain is still there. Has anyone had these same problems and what have you tried to help with the pain? Thank you so much for any help!

I’m sorry your husband is having problems but I’m happy he is still here. I am a 42 year survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I had way to much radiation in 1976, because they didn’t know what dosage to give. I have neck pain, bad posture, and am concerned about head drop. Dr. Michael Stubblefield In NJ is the premier doctor to see for these problems. Look him up. We have “Radiation Fibrosis Syndrome”. He also has some videos you can pull up. I hope your husband gets some relief. D. Lynn

I had same procedure but not sever pain in jaw, neck spams

Depends how they radiated you but.......

I have gone to rehab place to help me with exercises for my back and told them about my neck spasms. 3-6 times a day my nexk muscles would pull like wringing out a wet towel

I go out into the cold, BAM! Spasm

3-6 times a day

i told rehab people

they do "dry needling.'

its not accupuncture (which i've done with no success and it hurt)

Dry needling are different needles done differently

After a few sessions (been 6 months) I went from spams 3-6 times a day

to

3-6 times A WEEK

It helped me immensely

Heres a link on it or google it yourself

Please get your doctor to reccomend a place for rehan to do this, covered by ins if he writes a script.

I'm medicare, cost me $40 co-pay

Has he been screened for signs of osteoradionecrosis?  Has he had any recent dental work done?  Those could be places to look.

Best of luck to you both.

You might also want to post this in the head and neck cancer section, as that is more active and may yield better results.

Massage from a speech therapist or massage therapist has helped me.  I see the speech therapist every 2-3 months and the massage therapist every 2 weeks.  I've also been using a Ben-Gay type product called Icy Hemp from Alamo Botontials and CBD oil and I feel these are helping with the radiation side effects.

Thank you! He hasn’t had any tests like that, yet. I will check on the doctor you recommended. Take care and bless you!
