Chronic vomiting and diarrhea months after whipple

My dad is 9 months out from Whipple surgery. He was doing well from July to February, but has had sudden onset of chronic vomiting/diarrhea. He’s down 40 pounds in 2.5 months and can’t gain any energy. He’s on multiple “western” meds. We’re wondering if anyone has had success with non- traditional methods? The doctors say it’s a “blockage” or scar tissue issues and we have to manage the symptoms, but that it won’t go away. I’m reaching here...I know that, but thought I’d see if anyone had success with anything!

Close5 That’s terrible to read what your dad. Is going through,I have heard of chronic diarrhoea, not as much vomiting, happening after a Whipple but for both to occur seven months after surgery something is not right ,try pushing the drs for a definitive diagnosis, and find what is causing the symptoms.Have they tried OxyContin for the diarrhoea it can be used as a treatment ,I remember at one stage I was on a migraine tablet whose side effect was constipation to help My diarrhoea, luckily My doctor thought outside the square.I hope someone can suggest something that can help your Dad.

I can't offer much as my Whipple went well.  If the vomitting is from nausea he might try Phenegran or Zofran, used for chemo nausea and works for most.  Is he on enzyme tablets that most take after the Whipple?  I'm 2 years out from the Whipple and still get ocassional diarrhea but mostly caused by my diet when I eat cheese and dairy product (excluding yogurt), i eat a lot of peanut butter and plain white bread and also coffee.  Ask physician about possible damage to Vagus nerve but I don't think the Whipple involved this nerve.  Seek a second opinion and third if needed and if scar tissue why can't they operate and remove?  Hang in there.

Thanks!  He's on most RX things for these situations.  If he exclusively does the BRAT, he suffers from blockages.  It's really a no win situation, but I just thought I'd see if someone else had an idea.  I appreciate your time!

Thanks...we are learning that this is sort of a unique situation and will continue to work with all doctors involved.  PB and crackers seem to go well.  He is on most RX that are offered after a Whipple including enzymes and anti-nausea stuff.  The surgery to remove scar tissue was discussed, but at his age and weakness stage, combined with the likelyhood that it would create more scar tissue, it wasn't a "go".  We will seek another opinion if needed.  Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for your reply!  We will continue to work with all doctors involved and try anything new they present.  We are learning that his is sort of a unique no-win situation, unfortunately.

No new advice but just wanted to mention that my brother is 6 months out of whipple and still suffers from chronic diarrheae. more recently, he has had some success with Imodium. He is also managing smaller meals which seems to help also.

good luck with your fathers situation. As others have said,  diarrheae and vomiting together is abnormal. Keep poking at the doctors.

Thanks!  Prayers, good vibes, thoughts...whatever you prefer, to your brother.  The smaller meal idea has been a bit helpful...also eliminating ALL skinned foods (tomatoes, potatoes, peas, peppers...).
