Sandy,  You can get the doctor to prescribe a cortisone cream for the rash - it'll go away after a while, hopefully.

I find that if I take Acidophilus 100 million (Natures Bounty) faithfully and eat a greek yogurt once a day, my diahrrea is controlled.  I'm careful with what I eat because a lot of things can trigger an upset and then I'm in misery for a day or two.  I have always had a bit of a "sensitive stomach" anyway so I'm used to this situation.  There are many of causes for lung cancer and this website has a lot of info on it.  I've been taking Tarceva 150 since Fall 2010.  I don't feel 100% all the time, but it sure beats the alternative, doesn't it.  Just keep yourself busy doing things you love and you'll do better with a positive mindframe.  My prayers are with you.  Lucy

Hi sandydoodle, I'm a female in my late 40's and was diagnosed with stage IV nsclc last week. I was told I have BAC and like you I am a non-smoker. My doctor is prescribing Tarceva 150 mg. I am expecting authorization from the insurance co and ready to get started. I am optimistic and have the peace of God that I will get through this. Your post has helped me because I also have annoying phlegm and coughing - so unpleasant. How long were you on Tarceva before you experienced a reduction in the amount of phlegm? Thanks for your input and God bless you on your healing.

My 93 year old mother was on Tarceva for 18 months. It stopped working for her & the doctor took her off Nov. 2013. She is now on a more aggressive treatment and is tolerating it better than expected. I wrote a blog about her in July 2012.. I need to update it but felt you might like to read her story. Here is the link: http://bestrealhealth.com/mamas-cancer-journey-prayer-supple If you have more questions about her journey, please contact me through my blog and I can give you more details.

Thankyou Lucy for your info I tried to take the med late at night as someone sugested and I have had good results. I am now on100mg now after going off for 3wks & lung fluid returned. 150mg at the time CT scan showed well that it was working. With this dose I have no sores in my mouth now and can eat again  have only gained 3 lbs back and off my oxygen. A new CTscan is Mar 28th. I will put you all in my prayers,  and God bless. Thankyou

I have been on 75mg Tarceva for 5 months now;  the first  month at 150mg for 3 weeks BUT the side effects – diarrhea and rash in scalp, face, in nose and eyes did me in. I stopped for 5 weeks to rest my body. In July 2014 I started again at 75mg dose; cut the 150 pill in half. The rash and diarrhea returned but less intense.

I manage these side effects by staying  away from dairy, reducing caffeine intake to almost nothing, no spicy foods – a very plain diet is best. I go to my  comfort foods until my stomach and the diarrhea settles down. I experience diarrhea every 5- 9 days. Imodium helps – I take as directed on the package. So far my weight is stable; it fluctuates up and down by 3-5 pounds.

I drink LOTS of filtered water daily and apply body lotion everywhere daily. I drink liquids with a straw to reduce dry lips. This really helps.

I apply Moroccan oil to my scalp (I lost 40% of my hair 40% over 3  months). My hair stopped falling out 4 weeks ago – it is dry and grows slowly. The oil helps it look natural.

For my dry eyes the doctor advised Refresh PM – a gel for night time along with OcuSoft Plus – a eyelid scrub that you leave on overnight. This treatment along with day time Refresh drops helps control the dryness and for the first time in 6 months I am sty free.

I hope this helps.

May God bless you both throughout this journey.

Thank you for the response- it is very much appreciated! Good tip on the Moraccan oil - some one else said coconut oil works well too. He is on a "rest period" now to recover - had to go in for fluids 3 times - it was a brutal time. When he starts back on the tarceva he agreed to 50mg - doc wanted him to do 75mg - I will let him know it is tolerable for you. Your response was very encouraging. Prayers for you both.....

If one is sensitive to Tarceva, 50 mgs can be enough. I have been on Tarceva for 5 1/2 years, 3 1/2 of them on 50 mgs - my oncologist is happy with that as it is a high enough dose to be effective and low enough to keep the side effects at a minimum. I now have 6-monthly blood tests and an annual CT scan. I'm allergic to Imodium so take a low dose of steroids for the diarrhea, and cope with the occasional outbreak of pimples (which erupt mostly when I am very stressed) on my hairline, with Zindaclin gel, teenager acne stuff. Otherwise life is excellent.

Start taking the lower dosage of Tarceva from 50mg and slowly increase the dosage so she should not have any side effects like diarrhea.

Hi, I'm scheduled to start tarceva on Christmas eve.  I hav stage 4 nsclc with mets to my bone. I tested positive for EGFR. I haven't had any treatments yet. My oncologist at sloan is putting me on a "pulsed tarceva" treatment. I'm suppose to take a 1200mg dose 2 days a week and 50mg the other 5.  This is the plan for cycle 1 (4 weeks) I don't know what happens next.  Has anyone been on this treatment or has heard of this?  Thank you.
