Natural supplements for intestine?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a supplement that will strengthen the intestinal tract.  The chemo has caused a lot of havoc with mine and I've been off chemo for over six months.

I'm going to do some research also, but thought someone here would have some advice.

Thanks.  Take care,

Lois

Hi Lois My medical/alternative doctor recommends Glutamine. There's a great deal of research proving it's efficacy. A Google search on" Glutamine/digestive tract after chemo" should bring you lots of good information. Here's a link from some research I did when I began taking this supplement.......... http://www.drtimspeciale.com/Patient%20Education%20Series/Gl ............... Best of luck......Sheila

Also acidophillus and digestive enzymes are really good at keeping the gut working. I take digestive enzymes before each meal.  To keep my ph in line I take one fresh lemon juiced, in about 3 oz of water and this also will help the gut.  Take care MMS

Thanks MMS.  I have acidolphilus and take it.  I haven't remembered to take it daily and will keep it in mind.  I'll look into the enzymes.

Take care,

Lois

Hi Lois!  I know that this is going to sound very odd, but ever since I ended up with two episodes of perforated bowel because of the dexamethasone, I have had a very sensitive bowel for the last 5 years!!  I have found that yoghurt and odourless garlic tablets every day have been my saviour -- strange as this may sound.  I think that this is probably a combination of the acidopholis (sp) mentioned by MMS and the fact that garlic is known as the 'herbal' antibiotic.  Together these things have protected my 'gut' from becoming inflamed and causing major problems.  Just throwing it in for what its worth -- it certainly works for me!!  Good luck in controling your 'gut' -- its so very important because you've got to be able to maintain your weight.  The first thing that happens with each doctor's visit is that you are weighed, and if you start to lose weight the writing is somewhat on the wall.  And if your tummy is upset, it is very hard to gain or maintain your weight -- so it is very important to avoid upsets at all cost.  I do hope that you will be able to find something that with sooth and work for you so that life is not so difficult -- for  quality of life is so important.  Best wishes, Cath

Cath,

It doesn't matter how strange something sounds.  If it works, who cares?  I'm making a list of all these rememdies and my doctor and I will decide which one to try.

Thanks,

Lois

Lois - Hi!  I've taken all the aforementioned as well...they all worked great.  I eat a daily yogaart and Glutamine is one of the aminos in my daily protien shake.  I also took Glutamine during my transplants in tablet form because it's supposed to work wonders while on chemo...I assume it did its job.

I hope all is going well for you

I also want to make a comment about another vain to be very helpful known as Guided Imagery. It is awesome tool for pain management, induces restful sleep, etc. Guided Imagery is  effective without side effects!I am an Author of a Series of Guided Imagery CDS It has been a wonderful non-medical aid for cancer patients. It helps the person to go into a twighlight state of relaxation and begin to visulize oneself as a whole person again. This visulization helps tremoudously during chemo/infusion sessions because the time flies by quickly.

I can speak with conviction because I am standing on stage 4/breast cancer/mets to liver and bone. Guidance of Visulization takes me to a positive state of mind.

Love your feedback

Bless you,

susan
