RAI lemon candy

Hello everyone, blessings to all!

I had a total thyroidectomy in May, and I am going to go thru the RAI in September, I want to be prepared for it.

My Dr's do not tell the whole story, your in and out quickly.

I was wondering when to start the lemon candies and what kind to get, the ones I have bought are small balls, and not very sour at all.

And when do I start these?

I heard wait one day, and I heard you start on these right away?

Can anyone give me some helpful tip's going thru this?

Thank you!

Sour is the best if you like them.  Basically they stimulate the salivary glands and keep them open.  You really need to ask your nuclear med guys.  No one agrees.  Some say start that day others say wait 24 hours.  I question if it really makes any difference as to when you start.  I even made some fresh lemonade to get the lemons working.  Every little bit helps!

Hello,

I agree! Talk to your doctor. I started sucking on lemon drops the same day as my RAI. I had no problems with anything and felt great. Or I guess as good as I could. The 2nd time I did RAI, which was 6 months later, I had a smaller dose of RAI, forgot to suck on any lemon drops, went on with my life (I guess since it seemed like they didn't make such a big fuss as the first time) I I had side effects. My jaw popped, I had a gross salt taste in my mouth for several months after this. I had ear pain. It seemed like the list went on and on.  When I think back, I know it is because I just wasn't as prepared as the first time.  Glad to hear you are preparing! Good luck and blessings to you!  Nicole

My wife got sour Napoleons lemon drops.. I started them immediately after taking the radioactive iodine pill.  After my 2nd treatment, my salivary glands became extremely swollen and painful and those candies were the only solution.  I would recommend them absolutely.

I just made this same comment on another post, but be sure to get GOOD lemon drops. I got overly sweet cheap ones, and just felt even more nauseous trying to get those downs. If I have to RAI again (hoping not), I'm going to try the Altoids sours.
