ec radiation without chemo

My 90 year old father is scheduled for radiation without chemo since they don't think he can take chemo and due to age they will not operate.  Has anyone had a similar experience on an elderly person and are the side effects actually tolerable?  He chose to do this because he feels he needs to try something.  He already has a feeding tube and cannot eat anything else.  The fluids that the cancer produces will not go down his throat now and he chokes at times at night. While he has lost some weight he is still at 152. Although we have explained everything to him, I really don't think he has any comprehension of what he is going to go through with the cancer nor the radiation. His doctors think he may get some positive shrinking from the radiation if he can take it.
