I was on hydroxyurea for quite a few years and after fine-tuning the dosage, this medication kept my platelets well under control. In July 2011 I was diagnosed with an unrelated kidney cancer RCC stage IV. Since then the treatment that I have been having for my kidney cancer also kept my platelets under control and I am no longer taking hydroxyurea. The hydroxyurea worked very well for me with no noticeable side effects. Only the bloodtests may show some irregularities in the blood count and liver function caused by the medication.

Are you in remission now? How are you feeling right now? I wish I could stay positive like you. Yes, need to learn to enjoy life. I cannot imagine the journey you have gone through and that does not bother you. Life goes on.. :)

Exactly...life goes on. No, I am not in remission, but I do not think about that. There is a life to be lived and husband, children and grandchildren to be loved. Do not let a condition take over your life, live with it!

Thanks very much Theresa.

I will be on LA instead of GA. Is the pressure bearable? :)

swess,

The pressure doesn't hurt at all. Very bearable.

For some strange reason my platelets have elevated. They were under control for the last year but now hagone from the 300's to the 600's. I thought it may have been from a sinus med I was taking but that was at Christmas and I haven't taken any since. They have me on one pill/day. At one time thay had me on 9 per week but I leveled off. Now I am concerned with the elevated numbers over 600.

Should I be?

Let your oncologist worry!  That's what I did when mine jumped 490,000 in 4 weeks.  We never could figure out why, but they did drop back to 600,000 a few weeks later.  This is truly a strange form of cancer!

Hi Theresa

Just to share, I have done with my BMB. And yes the pain was bearable and just a little pressure. I didnt know it was already completed when the doctor told me is over. :)

Now I will be worrying of my result. Will be seeing my hematologist in 2 days time

Hi swess, you will feel relieved once you know what it is. It is the not knowing, that is often more stressful. Sending good thoughts to you. Margo

Very Starnge indeed.

I usually don't get flustered by small changes. This was jst a bit weird. They went from testing my blood every three monthes to every month. They haven't done this since I was first diagnosed with this back in 2006.

Thx for your response.
