By the way eating right is the key. I eat very little red meat, no fried food, I eat a lot of fish and seafood. I pay attention to my body. Find my vitamins and nutrients in my food, pills don't taste very good. I do get sick a lot because have no immunities. All in all I have a good life. I live much laugh often. I enjoy my life. Don't worry or stress they are negatives and shorten your life. But I am proof it's not easy to live without a pancreas but it can be done

My wife had a Whipple in 2001 at age 63. She had a CT for another issue on day one, came back to our home town(population 7000) on day two, and immediately had another CT targeting the pancreas. On day three our good friend had her in the surgery suite of our local hospital doing a Whipple proceedure. Lab showed definite pancreatic cancer. After a consultation, an oncologist recommended no chemo.

My wife will be 80 next month.

We feel very blessed!

Great you shared this story with us, many with pancreatic cancer need the uplifting stories that are becoming more frequent. I am 15 months post Whipple, doing fine, and even though tumors spread to liver my lanreotide treatments have contained the tumors and I am mostly living a good life with modifications to my diet.  Wish your wife many happy and productive years and it seems like science has saved and extended many of our lives.

I had the same wipple in September 1998 and I am still surviving. I still have quite a time with swallowing.I have developed a bar that extends from my sternum and down about 3 inches doctor hasn't figured out what it is they say it is calcium and I will just have to deal with it. The only problem is it is growing into my esophagus. Anyone out there have the same and what has been done for it.

I am pleased to report that I am 4 years and 3 months surviving after 2 Whipples in 2014. I was diagnosed with a malignant tomor of the head of the Pancreas. At the time, they gave me 4 months max, and told my lady friend to take me home and "make me confortable" I went to Dana Farber and met a very nice surgeon Dr. Wang and he and his team worked on me for 10 hours cutting and re-fitting the plumbing. I was up and walking after 4 hours, and left Women's Brigham ( where the surgery actually took place) 5 days later and have been doing really good since. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of adjustments, cramps, etc., certain foods that I once enjoyed (the greasy stuff!) I now had to eschew, but I am here and that is all that counts. I wish and pray that your Angels watch over you the way they did me.

Hi, I know of someone who is still alive 20 years after Whipple and is still cancer free.  It depends very much on the skill of the surgeon, but I suggest if you have got this far then you don't need to worry too much.  Just go out and enjoy life.  toodotty (PC Stage IV, no Whipple for me)

Plenty do well after the whipple. I had pyloric preserving type and am 8 years out. I gave up meat, dairy, but lots of alternatives. I take enzymes but was able to do without them until Recently. My weight is normal. I exercise half hour on the treadmill every day. I work full-time. if I little kids I could take care of them fine. After the Whipple for about two months you’re exhausted you will need a ton of help for a while. It gets better. Some people claim it takes a long time to recover but a lot of the patients are elderly when they get the surgery, were not healthy. You wanna watch what you eat, you want to eat nutrient rich foods. It reduces the risk if there’s any cancer of occurrences and preventing it if it’s pre-cancer.
