My husband was diagnosed with non small cell stage 4 lung cancer. It is also in his bones and brain. He has done 10 sessions of whole brain radiation and one session of chemo with carbo and taxol. What are his chances of survial...Dr. has not told us? He will not eat or drink and sleeps most of the day. What can I do for him? How long does anyone think he has? I don't know how to help him.

Has your husband tried targeting medicines such as Tarceva? Tarceva can do well if he has the right EGFR mutation. Good luck.

Hi there ibradleycat,

Your message really struck a chord with me.  It is very difficult being a carer, isnt it?  Especially when you really want to help but they don't want you to help!  I suggest to keep on gently offering him drinks and invalid type food (my husband will eat soft milky desserts even when nothing else will do).  Have you got some nutrition supplements (eg., Sustagen etc) which you can add to water to make fruity drinks, milky drinks or puddings?

my mom recently passed away after a very short (8 months) struggle with non small cell lung cancer. She was put on Tarceva in August and since then she didn't want to eat and slept a lot. We did get her to eat chocolate pudding and that was it. Try soft foods like pudding or yogurt.

Dr's don't give a survival rate because every patient is different. They did tell us that my moms was uncurable and inoperatable. The only piece of advice is to watch for stroke symptoms. My mom suffered with multiple strokes her last 3 weeks and that is what ended up taking her. The doctors didn't tell us that cancer can thicken up the blood and form clots but we did learn they don't want to put patients on a blood thinner because of the bleeding issues that can come from chemo. Just watch for anything unusual. You know your husband better than the doctors and just keep your eyes open.

Good luck

Hello, my father also has same disease in the same places. My father started radiation and completed it. Then completed chemo same drugs. Chemo did not work for him they have now told us he has 3 to 6 months. I haven't shared that news with him. Make your husband healthy smoothies with whey protein. Just be their for him, love him. At least he resting my father stays up all night and all day. He fights he sleep sometimes he is in so much pain he can't. Find you an outlet it can be very stressful taking care of someone who is sick.

You will hear all kinds of prognosis, but really, every patient is different.

My husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer 10/2007 with mets on his brain and adrenal glands.  We have been through several different treatments including surgery, chemo, radiation, and cyberknife.  There have been some really dark days.

While he is not "cured" he is still alive and, in fact, downstairs doing the dishes right now.  :)

If he's not eating or drinking then his body will not have the resources it needs for him to stay healthy.

Try Ensure from your grocer. It is packed with carbs and vitamins and comes in different flavors.

Hi  bradley cat

My name is Butch when I got to CTCA I was stage 3b nsclc that was 2007.There is no time limit on how long we have to live but he can help himself by fighting back. When I first started my chemo they had to hit me heavy Taxol-Capoplatin-Avastin.I was supposed to have 9 rounds made 7 then I got real sick my wife rushed me to emergency on Long Island.I went code blue and was in a coma 6 weeks i woke up Christmas Eve.I was on life support.I then wound up in a re-hab center to get off the vent.By time I got back to CTCA the tumors in my right lung were gone and in my left lung tumors were shrinking. So your husband can make it he has to fight get up and try to move around I know it's tough but he can and must do it.If he can't eat get him a McDonalds milk shake there is enough calories in it to help. But the bottom line is he must fight. If you need to talk to someone you can get in touch with me or my wife.Good luck and GOD BLESS
