Hi Brenda, In 1950 as an infant I had 10 radiation treatments on my Thymus. My mom said it was because I had an enlarged thymus and was a "Blue Baby". I would turn blue. In 1995 at age 45 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, had a mastectomy and chemotherapy. I also have had a perodiectomy (Wharthon's tumor), thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy due to cancerous and benign tumors respectively in 2001 and 2004. three of my high school girlfriends who were radiated for enlarged thymus as infants also have had thyroid and breast cancer. Can't help but think there is a connection to the radiation as a baby.

Hello there:

I too had radiation treatments for an enlarged Thymus at 3 months.  The year?  1945.  In 1983, I was diagnosed with breast cancer—masechtomy of left breast; reconstruction. On Feb. 1, 2013, I am having surgery due to parathyroid condition.  A nodule will be removed.

There is definitely a pattern here.  Thanks to all of you for sharing your stories.

When I was in my twenties the hospital that did the radiation treatments send a "recall" notice telling me that in some cases thyroid cancer occured approx 20 to 30 years after the treatments and I should get a regular thyroid scan.  Which I did for the next ten years when I was told I no longer need the scan.

When I was in my fifties I had a very over active thyroid according to the tech who did my thyroid up take test I had the highest number they ever saw for an overactive thyroid.  They used radiation to kill off the thyroid and now I take synthetic thyroid meds.  Do not know if the overactive thyroid is due to the childhood ratiation or if it due to the fact that thyroid issues gallop thru the females in my family especially those of us who have had children after age 35.

At the age of one week I begain Radiation treatments for an enlarged Thymus Gland... At about age 8, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism which now I have Hypothyroidism... On March 15th 2013, I was told I have right breast cancer... I have a tumor 1.8cm in size was told it is the most comin type I have my first consult on March 20 2013. :-(   any advice?  TY,KME

Brenda:

I don't know if you are still researching this topic but I was born in 1953 in Nelson, BC.  I was diagnosed fairly early on as my Mom told me I would have trouble breathing because the thymus crowded the lungs. At times she said she would put me in an ice cold bath to "shock" me back to breathing.

I was treated in Trail, BC.  I don't know how often but my Mom would take me on the bus there and back.

I had frequent illness as a child well into early 20's. When I was about ten a doctor told us I would have an 85% chance at developing thyroid cancer.  Instead, at the age of 45 I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer , for which I had a lumpectomy, right lymph nodes excision, radiation and some chemo. Cancer free now 15 years.

My Mom had very severe toxemia while pregnant with me. She also had very severe toxemia when pregnant with my brother 3 years later.  As an infant he was thought to have leukemia because his white count was so high. i now believe our symptoms related to her toxemia and our fetal immune systems.

Hi Brenda,

My name is Lorraine.  I'm one of the babies in 1951 that had radiation treatment for an enlarged thymus gland.

In 1996, I was operated for a muti-nodular thyroid which was cancerous.  Fortunately, the cancer was contained in the thryroid and I did not need any radiation treatment.

A Dr. at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore,MD. did the surgury.  He commented my thyroid was very deformed and for some reason doctors in the Ohio Valley did a lot of radiation treatment for enlarged thymus glands.  If you read about thymus glands, everyone is born with big thymus glands and they eventually shrink.

I pray to God I don't develop breast cancer.  I am so sorry for your misfortune.  You would think we could go back and confront the doctors and medical system that abused radiation.

I called the hospital that radiated me and all the files for my treatment were lost.  I am convinced there is definitely a connection with the radiation and the cancer.  The Dr. at Hopkins confirmed it.

Thank you for reaching out.

Lorraine

Brenda and Lorraine,

I too had the radiation treatments for an enlarged Thymus Gland in Feb. of 1950... I was just recently diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma and currently awaiting to have a bilateral mastectomy. There are no other family members diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  I have also had thyroid problems most of my life. And Lorraine I too feel that in someway the medical system should be held accountable for their actions... We were Infants and had no say in this form of treatment.  Our parents had intrusted the medical field that treating our thymus glands in this manor was a necessary procedure.

I have an update re: the results of parathyroid surgery performed on Feb. 1.  The nodule was 2.5 centimeters.  I was told that the average is usually .5 centimeters.  Mine, obviously was very large.

Over and out,

Barbara

Hello, my name is Brenda and Im researching Infant Radiation for Enlarged Thymus Gland in 1940's & 1950's. I have some questions for anybody who was radiated during these times for enlarged thymus gland.

What were your symptoms?

Were your parents given a different diagnosis?

How did your parents discover the actual diagnosis?

How many radiation treatments were given? Every how often?

Hi Brenda,

I was radiated for an enlarged thymus as an infant. I don't have a lot of details but was told I had a lot of bronchial issues and my parents were told it would help.

When I was 8 years old I had a recurrent malignant parotid tumor. It was not agressive and was removed surgically.  Six years ago I had adenocarcinoma of the parotid.  This was a very agressive form and had advanced into my lymph nodes.  I went through three surgeries, chemo and 42 treatments of radiation.  My neck and  facial nerves are destroyed and I am in a constant state of pain / numbness.

I have tried to get more information on the effects of the thymus radiation.  I have been told that the radiation can cause thyroid cancer and there is no evidence it is the source of any other issues.  In fact, the last time I had cancer I didn't feel well and knew something was very wrong.  I couldn't get a doctor to test me beyone the normal blood work. It took a special endocrinologist who believed I did not feel well and she pursued getting to the bottom of it. By then a year had passed and my cancer was advanced.

I love the idea of the Yahoo group.  The information out there is just so sketchy.

HI BA,

I had 17 radiation treatments on my thymous gland when i was 3 to 6 months old. My Mom was told it was choking me to death and if I didn't have it I would die. The only think I was ever told is you have chances of getting cancers from the breasts on up if you had these treatments. So far I have had my thyroid removed a year ago this past February along with three benign tumors that kept getting bigger making it very difficult for me to swallow, and they were visibly showing on the outside of my neck. I also had one that has been removed numerous times on the back of my neck taken out. For some reason it keeps growing back and no reason has been given to me as to why, but again it was not cancerous. I also had a sterotactical proceedure done on my left breast about 15 years ago to remove a benign growth. So far this has been it. But I would not be surprised at all if what is happening to you has something to do with the radiation treatments we recieved. God bless you and I will keep you in my prayers.
