I also want to add to my recent post that now, at age 68, along with the thyroid cancer possibility, I have extremely bad osteoarthritis that showed up about a year ago in my hands. My fingertips have "mucus cysts" right above almost every nail bed of my fingernails. These cysts, according to my rheumatologist, are related to osteoarthritis. They have disfigured my nails by making vertical grooves in every nail that have a cyst above the nail bed. I was told that nothing can be done about them because they often come with osteoarthritis. I also have arthritis in my back that I have had in my lumbar region since I was 40. I also have very bad cataracts that suddenly appeared and became severe a few months ago. My sight is really bad, especially in my left eye. I was supposed to have cataract surgery, but now that I have this issue with thyroid cancer, it is on the "back burner."

hi brenda i am not a woman my name is terry, was radiated straight out of the womb, 1x for hours. 1953. thyroid cancer removed 2001, heart transplant, heart had radiaton burns on it, squamous cell carcinoma 2013. upper right lung removed, they used the enlarged thymus as rationale, for a study that they were trying to show radiation didn't cause cancer, everybody was spending their money on bomb shelters, banks pushed and lobbied the study and the number one health burder at the time was tonsil ectomies, every body i knew was getting them out, hey, i still got mine, lol, but it gave me weight problems up and down and they doctor that did it would call my mother and tell her i was getting a little chubby, so he would put me on prescription diet pills, at the ripe old age of about 9 yo for the first time went on till i was an adult, but had thyroid ectomy stage 6 thyroid caner 10-25-01, artificial heart as my heart had radiation burns all over it and then sqaumous cell carcinoma upper right lobectomy 1-08-13. found on routine test for my thyroid ectomy. doing really good now, cancer free they say got the lung cancer didn't metasisize at all, unlucky but lucky, as i look back at the pictures i was really sick weight swings on from 315 pounds went down to 148, after a million miles of walking. am really healthy now, lift weights, am 6' and 245 pounds 60 yo and can still bench press a buick, almost lol

My husband died of melanoma in 2001.  He had had his thymus gland irradiated because he had a "croup like cough" according to his mother.  I believe she said 3-4 times.  This was in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area.

Yes, I was also radiated as an infant.  Possibly 3 months old.  My mother, also, was told I had an enlarged thyroid.  I had several treatments.  My parents are dead now, so no one to ask.  I was born in No. Hollywood, California, at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital.

I have been on medication for a low tyroid since I was a teenager.  I don't think I've ever had a scan.

So far no cancers - but should I ask my doctor to check my thyroid in some way?  I am 66 now.  Born in 1947.  Female.

I am finding these postings very interesting because I am also adopted at birth with no parental information what so ever.  So I have no family medical information.

Thanks,

Linda H.

Hi Linda:

Barry here to say hi to our generation who got radiated.

I've known about mine for decades and about the only thing I have done is when I have a physical exam the doctor palpates my thyroid for nodules, lumps, etc.  I'm trying to remember what else has been done.  I might have had an ultrsounds on it also some time back.  Basically the findings have been negative-maybe small lumps but nothing of concern I'm told.

That's about it for me with the thyroid. So far so good.

I'm now 73 years old so been over 70 years and no problem.

Any questions let me know.   I was Born at St Vincent's in LA and lived first 20 plus years not too far away.

Best,Barry E

Thank you, Barry.  It's good to know there are others who are keeping track of this situation.

So far, so good.

Cheers,

Linda

I think it was done as research to see if it would stop SIDS. It was also done over a wider period and usually stated as 1930-1960 and I have read even earlier. Doctors had discovered radiation and were experimenting with high doses ignorantly.

Hello, my name is Brenda and Im researching Infant Radiation for Enlarged Thymus Gland in 1940's & 1950's. I have some questions for anybody who was radiated during these times for enlarged thymus gland.

What were your symptoms?

Were your parents given a different diagnosis?

How did your parents discover the actual diagnosis?

How many radiation treatments were given? Every how often?

i was irradiated the day of my birth, 8-8-53/ didn't return to my mother for nine hours not sure how many or if they did it again, i think they did at six years old when i broke my right arm falling out of a tree. i had thyroid cancer stage 6, had complete thryrectomy in 01 and a heart transplant in may 02. there were radiation burns on my heart. then got lung cancer jan 13, had it removed, am cancer free. but no thryroid, causes many problems diabetes then it becomes hard to control quite a balancing act but have the best team of dr.'s in the world at sacred heart and rockwood clinics in spokane washington. am 60 be 61 aug 8, so am doing good now.

I was radiated at two months of age (aorox 11/22/49). It was done because I could not keep formula/breast milk down. My mother was a registered nurse who worked in the same hospital. It was a standard procedure at the time used to shrink the thymus gland so that I could swallow. I was given two doses the routine was three doses but I was able to keep liquid down after two. I have had many a thyroid scan done over the years. I ended up with a very over active thyroid. According to the tech I registered the highest numbers she ever saw on a thyroid uptake test. I was given medication but it did not calm the thyroid down so it had to be radioactively killed off and is now totally inactive and I am on levithroxin to replace the thyroid in my system. Other than that my health has been fairly uneventful. I am considered per diabetic .
