Hi Brenda:

Barry here.  I was told by my  mother enlarged thymus.  Was supposedly a few months old, not sure,  I was crying and suddenly stopped. she went back and I was turning blue.  They rediated thymus which shrunk it.  I'm now 73 years old.  Have my thyroid palpated at physical and believe I had a scan of it a few years ago.  Have had no cancer and thyroid seems fine.  sounds like I'm lucky.

Very active-have run 20 marathons and now mountain bike every weekend.   In excellent health so far.  No medicatios.

Hope this helps.

Barry

Hello Brenda, Thank you for researching the radiation treaments.  Were you radiated as a young child?  I would like to know your reason for researching. Also, I would like to say I'm sorry for everyone who was radiated and had cancer.  We are all together- in the same boat.

I'm 63 years old.  At 48, I had a multi-nodular cancerous thyroid removed at Johns Hopkins Hospital in MD.  Dr. Udellsman said it was the most adnormal thyroid he had ever seen.

My radiation was done in 1951, Martins Ferry, Ohio.  My mother told me as an infant when I cried, I sounded like a rooster crowing.  She called  Dr. Bruce Lee in Tiltonsville, Ohio and said he expected her to call because I had an enlarged thymus and he wanted to radiate the thymus gland.

I had a series of radar treatments.  I don't know how many days or the strength of the radiation.  When I was a teenager (about 15-16 years old) we heard reports on t.v. about patients  receiving  radiation treatments as infants in 1940-1950's and experiencing cancer in the throat, head and chest area.  I knew I would eventually end up with cancer so once a year I had a Doctor check my neck for any abnormalities. So far, I had thyroid cancer and I ve been diagnosed with diabetes.

For the past ten years I've had  chonic fatigue and fibromyalgia.  I do not know if this has any relationship to the radiation.  I pray I have no more side-effects from the radiation threatments. If I do, I will report them to you on this web site.

Reading everyone stories has brought tears to my eyes. I pray for everyone who has had problems.  Is their anything we can do to let people know what was done to us?  I think we have a right to speak out and let it be known how we have suffered because of the radiation treatments. I'd like to know the thinking involved.  The thymus gland is enlarged in all infants and skrinks as we get older.  Why did they give us the radiation in the 40-50's and not before or after?

I called the hospital that did the radiation treatments and wanted to see the documentation.  I was told they had a fire and all the records for that time period were destroyed. I was never able to discuss how the radiation effected my life. It was like I was the only one in the world with this problem. Now I read it was an epidemic in the 40-50's.

Please keep telling your stories and every little thing you can think of concerning the radiation treatment.

Thanks again, Brenda.

Lorraine

sorry to hear that, i to got the radiation, they didn't even tell my mom day i was born, i have had life long problems including thyroid, had cancer total thyroidectomy 2001, and heart transplant 2002. lung caner 2013 upper right lobectomy and of course have all the syndromes that go with that, i don't get bitter as that will kill you in itself but i do think there should be some sort of fund like the asbestos fund for people who were exposed to this, and the pain and frustration they have endured, who is at fault, well the government regulates doctors but this is as bad or worse as it is way more wide spread with way more victims than the tuskegee syphilis study which was conducted by the center for disease control. so we were human guinea pigs and should be compensated for all the time, money spent on medical things that have taken money out of our pockets all our lives, so sorry this happened to all of us.

I SO AGREE WITH YOU.. WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS FIND A LAWYER GROUP THAT WOULD TAKE THIS TO COURT FOR US FOR 1% OF THE GROSS AWARD. I LIVE IN A VERY SMALL TOWN IN ILLINOIS SO MY CHANCES OF FINDING ANYONE THAT WOULD BE WILLING TO DO THIS IS MOST LIKELY IMPOSSIBLE. WE SHOULD PUT THE WORD OUT ON THIS SITE AND SEE WHAT WE CAN POSSIBLY COME UP WITH?

Yes, agreed.  We need an attorney from a big city that handles malpractice law suits.  Some lawyers that do malpractice have had problems themselves. Maybe, we could find an attorney that has been radiated. We need to find out what we need to do to file a suit.

Hi Twila,

I was born and received the radiation treatments in Martins Ferry, Ohio.  I'm sorry to hear about your pnuemonia.

I'm not a Dr. but I would not be suprised if your low t cells were caused by the radiation.

I called Martins Ferry hospital for the information on the radiation treatments but was told a fire destroyed the records. I hope you recover shortly from your illness.

I would be interested in all the information you have on  the Rochester Study.  How much radiation was used, how many times. Anything from the study would be appreciated.

According to one of the messages posted,  one person stated she had psoriasis which is an immune disorder. They later discover her thyroid needed to be removed.  If you have not had a scan of the thyroid, do so.
