Hi Sandman,

Yes I get a dry cough but mainly when I eat and like another on here my nose runs too. sometimes at night if I slip down in bed the cough hits me then as well, I've spoken to the surgeon and the head of the MDT about this and they seem fairly unconcerned about it and with 2 years behind me (and the cough becoming much easier to control now) I think it's just part of the 'new normal' as my surgeon put it. Hope you make a great recovery and that this may have been of some help.

Martin

does the dry cough ever let up.......is going back to work possible? should I try to sit up higher in bed to avoid coughing at night?

How is your voice quality?  the cough could be a  nasal drip, caused from aspiration, a vocal chord issue or reflux.  try some antihistamine to see if improves.  my husband has a paralyzed vocal chord which causes a small amount of aspiration which leads to his having a constant cough. he has had two implants put in and will probably need a another.

I neglected to say he is 5yrs post op. we think the vagus nerve was impacted during the surgery causing the paralyzed vocal chord.

Yes in fact most of the recovrey problems do get better with time, I'm 2 years post opp now and can actually sleep on my right side after a coulple of hours propped up. I'm just getting over a bad cold though which has definately affected the cough but it's getting better again now I'm over it. As regards sitting up in bed I started almost completey in a sitting position, not that i needed to be that high up because of the cough or reflux but any lower and I had too much pressure on my tail bone and my legs became uncomfortable. Now I can lay on my back with just my head raised and I seem okay. Hope this helps, things do improve

Hey hey everyone! Sorry been CRAZY busy the last few days but I have an update!

-Halls are the only type of cough candy, lozenge, whatever that controls my cough, nothing else comes close

-The bigger update is that I have been switched from Losec 20mg twice per day to Nexium 40mg twice per day. Ever since that happened, the cough has gone down a lot! I still cough, but not like I used to.

Thank you for all the responses...it's nice to hear other stories from other people that had the same type of problem. =)

Hi There

I had a esophagectomy months ago and I got a sever coughing after my surgery. So annoying with some pain in my chess. my Dr prescribed omeprazole then pantoprazole but didn't work on me. one of my freinds gave me a natural breathing oil. I just sniffed it once a day. Worked cool and I am so happy now. I wish you get better feel soon.

I am sorry,I can't prescribe something here but, in my case all I used was kind of essential oil that made me feel better. I think I should wait for a couple of months to see if I get stable.

Hi everyone,

This is my latest hope in finding a solution to my cough. I am 69 years young and 10 years post op, but I still cough way too much. During this COVID-19 time, it makes everyone look suspiciously at me of course! I sleep elevated (but alway slip down the bed and have to constantly reposition myself!) and take protonix twice a day. When I eat, my nose runs and I cough sometimes just sipping on water or other liquid. I have had about every test possible but still no solution. One doctor told me it is gastric rhinitis, but no sprays solve the problem. NasalCrom does seem to help a little. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions you might have. Desperate...
